We are relocating to Canton and are planning to set up in an apartment for a year while we get to know the area. (Neither of us have ever lived in that area of SE Michigan).

The two apartments that we are looking at are in two different school districts; Plymouth-Canton and Wayne-Westland.

Our current apartment complex has a policy where we can move into one of their other properties in the area if we need to relocate. The apartments we are interested in are in Canton. So, please don't suggest that we move to another city. I appreciate the sentiment (and that everyone has favorites), but we aren't flexible on this at this time. We just want to get my husband closer to AA and stay together as a family and this is the option that would work best at this time. His start date is at the end of the month, so we need to make this decision and get moved quickly.

I'm looking for information on both districts, the good and the bad. My son is going to be a first grader and will be using the special ed program in either district we choose. (He has a speech disorder and needs speech services.)

I want to go into either district with my eyes open.

Thank you in advance for the information.

Not much of a choice between schools..But knowing what I do about Wayne-Westland, I would pick ANY (well almost any) school district in Michigan over Wayne-Westland.

Plymouth Canton.

Canton is cheaper, but if you can, take a spin around Plymouth. Loved it when we lived there (within walking distance of downtown)

Plymouth-Canton may be the highest performing school district in Wayne County. Wayne-Westland is just blah - ok - average.

Wayne-Westland seems to be big, so it may help to look into individual schools. Maybe the parts in Canton are better than the parts in Inkster?

Thanks for your help!

We got an apartment in the Plymouth-Canton district.

One of the reasons why we are renting is so that we can get to know the area, so I'm sure that we will make it up to Plymouth Twp and take a look around.

Oh - I just wanted to point out that the elementary school my son would have been assigned to in the Wayne Westland district is supposed to be one of the better schools in the district.

Overall, when I told my husband that one of the apartments was in the WWSD, he wasn't thrilled, but was willing to keep an open mind.

He also asked his peers for their feedback and they come back with Plymouth Canton too.
