Detroit is exactly how it should be.

Why does everyone want to "Fix" Detroit?

If you ran a business, a hotel, would you keep operating at a loss with consistent 70% Vacancy Rates?

sounds good to me. Turn it into farmland.
There have been a few well known urban planners suggest this very idea. I think they are onto something.

How about massive inland canals jutting into the City.

Something like the Inverse of Dubai. Instead of building Islands into the Sea, bring the Sea (Lake St. Clair) into the land.

I like that idea. We could even go as far as to make it the Venice of North America.

We are onto something here

I've got a couple of other ideas.

One even includes raising an Army.

I think that Detroit's biggest problem is the fact that there is no reason to move there. Once you take car insurance into account, its actually cheaper to live in the suburbs. Downtown Detroit is really nice and there are a lot of new developments in that area, but why would anyone live there when they could live in Ferndale/Hazel Park for less money and have access to a better school system?

Default What can be done to fix Detroit?

How to fix Detroit:

Detroit has a great park out on the west side that stretches from I-96 to Dearborn. River Rouge Park is GOURGEOUS!!! W. Outer Drive could be a new project to work on. They could put any sort of entertainment along Outer Drive, including a big ampitheatre, a bandstand, a Planetarium maybe, or even a theme park. THE CITY NEEDS MORE THINGS GOING ON OUTSIDE OF DOWNTOWN!!! They need to extend the people mover to more places like River Rouge Park. Cities like Dallas and Houston have more than one skyline/ office complex. Detroit could use another spot to put some world headquarter/ high tech office spaces. Where would be a good place for that? The Grand River Avenue and I-96 junction. What could they put there? They could build a new park along Plymouth Road that would make the area a little bit nicer. They could build a new home for the Detroit Pistons to start out with. Shouldn't a team be in the city that it's named for? It would be cool to build it along Grand River. Grand River could be the main street for this area like Woodward is for Downtown. Why do I like this location? Because this is an area that could be lightened up a bit. I haven't been there for 6 years, but I remember the abandond buildings in this area. IT COULD USE A HUGE LIFT!! It has decent transportation with the Davison and Southfield freeway nearby. Last thing Detroit needs is another freeway!!! So it's not necassary to start a project on that. Detroit just needs more quality of life and more jobs. For no doubt it has the potential, the city just needs a real mayor!! And Detroit needs the money to do these kind of things of course.

Just a few things I would like to share

To the self-proclaimed non-racist: AmericanThinker - blacks built this nation as well, and did it for free for HUNDREDS of years. Do you think that all of those MILLIONS of black people who left the South to come to the northern cities, came just to rape, kill, and destroy? NO, they came to WORK. My paternal grandfather worked at Great Lakes Steel until retirement, and my grandmother worked at Tiger Stadium until her death. They committed no crimes. My maternal grandfather was a concrete mason, and his wife was a homemaker.

To all of the other posters (and the, rmax, crustedfilth) who make fun of a down-and-out city for which they will not lift one finger to assist its turnaround - nobody forced white folks to leave the city. Y'all left on your own volition. Nobody forced y'all to sell your houses. White folks have all the money and all the power to do anything to anybody that they want.

To an outside the box-thinker in Vision-Quest - Detroit does have a skyline/office complex outside of its downtown - it's called the New Center. If the Great Depression hadn't derailed the Fisher Brothers intentions to build two more towers, this area would have been remarkable!

And yes, Rouge Park is a good, but not great park. Its rebirth is being spearhead by a group called the "Friends of Rouge Park". Below is an example of some of the POSITIVE things they are doing:

The Warrendale (Detroit) Blog: Rouge Park Appreciation Day

No, Detroit does not need another freeway. ENOUGH NEIGHBORHOODS (Black Bottom/Paradise Valley, Boston-Edison, Joseph Tireman, Harper-Van Dyke, etc) have been ripped in half or completely destroyed by freeways. Rather, we need rapid transit along Woodward, Grand River, etc.

DETROIT SHOULD NOT BE BULLDOZED. There are too many once-beautiful neighborhoods that could be reborn.

usroute,

I'm not making fun of Detroit or the Downtown area - a "Down & Out" City.

It is what it is.

No offense, I think you lack the basic understanding of what has been going on since the '50's.

The Detroit Skyline is in Southfield and Troy and Dearborn. The Mass Transit will connect Ann Arbor to Howell. The shopping is in Troy, Novi and Sterling Heights.

Money which could go to Detroit schools or Police is spent on a People Mover which has consistantly lost money from the start or corrput Detroit Officals (think Casino Locations).

Houses in Boston Edison go for $10,000. Get 5 of your buddies to chip in 50 K each and together fix an entire block.

What exactly do you want me to do???

I think that over the years there have been a lot of white people who have sincerley wanted to help Detroit. The problem is that we still have the Coleman Young legacy ("The only way to fight discrimination is to reverse it"). I seem to remember a couple of years ago, the City of Detroit was prepared to close the Detroit Zoo rather than see it kept running by private money from white people.
