Being relatively poor, I have been looking at real estate in Detroit. There seems to be some very nice houses for amazing prices around Palmer Park and the golf club, along Riverside street or around that area. I have been reading a lot of bad stuff about Detroit but being from DC I am familiar with good and bad neighborhoods (I am white and live in a nice neighborhood just a few blocks from housing projects and open air drug markets) so I don't think it is possible that all of Detroit can be bad. Would this area of Detroit be reasonably safe, walking distance to shopping, schools, etc? Any information will be appreciated.

Sure, but some of it is the area across Woodward from Palmer, which contains some of the worst blight in the city.

Captain,

I'll assist you if I can.

R U looking to buy or rent or squat?

What exactly does "Poor" mean? If you must hunt and fish for food perhaps living within walking distance to Belle Isle and the river front would be best. You can hunt deer and other wild life there in the park.

Do you have people to protect or are you going it alone?

If you really need a mansion the maintenance on those Ghetto Mansions is burdensome. The first thing to go will be the shutters.

Do you plan on paying for electricity or will you eventually run extension cords from neighboring commercial properties ? Will you be taking wood from the neighboring structures for use in your fireplace or do you plan on maintaining a furnace and paying for heat? Come winter you will need heat.

Would you happen to know anything about Urban Farming??

You might also like the Indian Village, East English Village, Rosedale Park and Sherwood Forest neighborhoods, among others within the city of Detroit. This might give you an idea of other neighborhoods within the city and their locations: Neighborhoods in Detroit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palmer park is great. However do not just look at purchase prices, Know your taxes and other fees. Palmer park has its own security force. Who pays for that?

If you will have kids in public school, I highly recomment that you go outside of Detroit. There are a few good options in detrtoit but very few.

Of course, a few photos of some nice homes. Here's news for you: Every big city in America has neighborhoods with nice homes. Maybe it should show the boarded up and torched mansions in Arden Park? A lot of those older homes are from Palmer Woods and Palmer Park, where the thread author is looking at. Problem is, this: W Hollywood, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan 48203 - Google Maps is DIRECTLY across 7 and Woodward from Palmer. That's the problem with Detroit's disappearing neighborhoods. You never know how it is just around the corner.
