My mother currently works at sinai-grace and has for 35 years.

I don't understand why people worry so much and safety. Most people are fine unless you "stick out". Which simply means being ignorant of your surroundings. Use the same common sense as any other place.

Outer drive borders the hospital to the north side and on the west side of the city is home to some nice houses.


Most of the murders are drug related, robberies have been dropping since the mid 90's.

When we went to drive by the "old neighborhood" my cousin the cop told us to roll up the windows, lock the doors, leave at least a cars length between you and the car in front of you (just in case you need to escape) and if you don't have to stop at a red light...don't.

That sounds like you were east of downtown where decline is a little more evident, but Downtown Detroit is one of the safest places you'll ever go to, compared with the rest of the city, with police on almost every street downtown. Some major skyscrapers include the renaissiance center, the penobscot building, and the guardian building.
