I think that is a little bit ridiclous... especially if Grandad liked Detroit and didn't want to move.

I don't live in Detroit yet and you can say im naiive but i dont know yet. we are moving over at the end of the month. When we were in Detroit in May, I didn't feel threatended or scared. Sure the first time we went my husband said he felt a bit uncomfortable being the only white ppl wandering around in the inner city, but I was looking at ppl thinking, they are just going about their everyday business and why should they bother us or us them for that matter...I think most of the fear is in ppls heads and im not saying that there isnt crime or danger, but I think its just the same over 8 mile road as it is on the otherside....maybe they use bribary, power and money on one side and guns on the other...at the end of the day, same difference.

Detroit has it's bad areas and its good areas. If you wander a block or two away from the good areas, then you'll get a picture of what everyone is talking about when they talk about the Detroit Ghetto.

You can say that fear is all in people's minds. However, when I lived in one of the "better" inner suburbs:

1) A lady was carjacked while she was waiting for traffic to clear as she got off the highway. She was taken by the driver to Detroit and raped repeatedly.

2) There was a drive-by shooting at one of the local high schools.

3) A lady was walking to work and got held up in broad daylight.

And then when you turn on the news, you find out which banks have been robbed and what drug stores got their ATM machines ripped off. And a lot of those robberies are people from Detroit coming in the 'burbs and doing the crime.

And - oh - did you notice how many stores down there have bars on their windows because they don't want people walking off with their stuff? Other cities I've lived in have downtown areas where people don't put bars on the windows.

One company decided to open a cell phone business in the city and not have bars on the windows....they promptly got ripped off.

Yeah, there are problems north of 8 mile, but you don't have the fear of getting shot when you go to a fireworks display in the suburbs. (That happened a few years ago at the International fireworks display....a friend of mine luckily didn't get shot while people around her did.)

I can appreciate your naivity because I was naive when I moved here too. I got over that pretty quickly.

lol right, point taken... (im sorry it isnt funny at all but I had to laugh at that comment.)

Yer I guess I'll get over my naivity, unfortunately...the thing is, I just cant get it into my head that ppl want to rape and murder other ppl. Which school was it (the drive by)? Goodness your friend must have been terrified...is he/she ok? a firework fell over at a newyears party i went to last year, it went all over everywhere and I was scared to death! I would be traumatised if what happened to your friend had happened to me.....arghhhh Im moving to Detroit....

I work with an American guy in Germany and before I came over to Detroit he said that there isn't much to see there...I really didn't believe him, I mean I've never been but it was hard for me to imagine, I thought that even a city that has been neglected would have something to offer. OOPS! I drove round for well over an hour, in the rain (to make it a bit more gloomy) and really, I didn´'t know when to stop, I couldn't find shops, or a nice street with restaurants and bars or some quirky bakery or actually anything that attracted me to get out of the car. Are there places?
We went a few days later to a Tigers game, (which was my first baseball experience, brilliant!) after that we went in a casino which was quite funky, but in terms of Detroit city we don't know if there is actually anything there........ so we decided to stay in the burbs.... (part fear part boredom)

Is anyone doing the 30 mile Midnight bike ride through Detroit on the 19th Sep?

Default Midnight bike ride

It's on the 22nd of Sep - not the 19th.

Detroit Synergy - Detroit Bikes! joins UDM Midnight Ride :: Friday, Sept. 22nd @ 10pm (http://www.detroitsynergy.org/projects/detroitbikes/folder.2006-09-06.1256883131/event.2006-09-06.8089100852 - broken link)

I thought you were kidding when you said there was a santioned event that required strapping a helmet and riding through downtown Detroit after dark. The last line that states "cyclists should return around 5 am". Here is an excerpt:

The UDM students will begin at 10 p.m. Before the night is over, the 36-mile round trip excursion will include such sites as the Palmer Park/Palmer Woods areas, the Detroit City Airport, Downtown Detroit, the Cultural Center, Eastern Market, the Boston - Edison District, and other Detroit destinations. Escorting the students will be members of UDM Public Safety Department. The bike tour includes rest stops to point out places of interest and a hot dog break between 12:30-1:00 a.m. at Detroit's famous Lafayette Coney Island. The cyclists should return to campus around 5 a.m. Saturday.

Paddington, do you really think your statements were necessary? Negative remarks like that continue to keep us going backwards instead of forwards. This is 2008, it is time for a change. I have HOPE!
