I would NEVER move to Flint but that is just the opinion of someone who doesn't want to live with 4 dead bolts, bars on my windows and a security system just to feel "somewhat safe" .

I live in Flint, and have for 32 years. We have none these things, and I feel perfectly safe in my home. I have great neighbors, and we all look out for one another.

Flint doesn't necessarily equate to the north end. There are pockets of well kept, low crime areas, that are not reflected in the statistics.

Forgot about that side of town too. Is that still in the Flint City SD or Kearsley SD?

It's Flint on the west side of Center Rd. and Kearsley on the East side.

Tricia, sounds like you live in the area where my wife grew up. Her family lived on Woodrow, about a block west of Center Road.

Many of my friends in high school lived in the area south of Court Street near Mott CC, but west of Dort Highway. That's still a nice part of Flint.

Also, when turning the car around to find a good place to take a photo of MSD, I drove through a neighborhood that I don't even remember, with well-maintained, stately homes.

Yep...the East Village. I'd LOVE to live in that neighborhood. It's like the Miller Rd Mansions jr.

I love Flint. I still go all the time, and many, many, many years ago I worked at a rental store on Pierson Rd. I thought for sure I would be shot or something, but only a few kinda close calls, but met a lot of real nice people. For the most part Flint gets a very bad rap, and is full of nice people.

If you want to live in a bigger city you're going to have to deal with crime.

"Crime statistics normally encompass entire communities, but when asked by The Journal, the Flint Police Department isolated crime data to the downtown area. The Journal compared those rates to crime statistics reported to the FBI by the suburban departments.
Some of the findings:

• There has not been a homicide in downtown Flint in two years, and there have been only four sexual assaults in that time.
• The assault rate is about the same, per capita, in downtown Flint as in the Grand Blanc area.
• A person is statistically more likely to be the victim of aggravated assault or robbery in Burton or Flint Township than in downtown Flint. • Car thefts were somewhat higher in downtown versus the suburbs in 2007. In 2008, car thefts declined dramatically in downtown Flint."
