Downtown Flint, at least from my observation when visiting last summer, is on the upswing, if anything, so I don't see where the police are coming from. Now my old neighborhood, a bit to the north and west of downtown, looks like a battle zone. The house that I grew up in, and my grandparents' house across the street, are now overgrown vacant lots. The nice apartments that were built when I was a kid are boarded up, with at least one unit burned out. When we visited in 1989 I had lunch with a former golfing buddy who now lives in Grand Blanc. He said that my old neighborhood was one of the worst drug neighborhoods in Flint.

The problem as I see it in Flint, is an even greater socioeconomic divide. With the downturn in GM, those who could find work did so - elsewhere - leaving only the poorest and the well-off behind, for the most part. Many of my friends who lived in East Village still live in or around Flint.
