Ok, a stupid question, but we just got a temp mailbox (a permanent one apprarantly comes when the phase is 80% occupied) and I am not sure what you do with the red arm? lol, in Toronto we simply walked to strategically placed mailboxes and mailed our letters. Do I put my outgoing mail in it and put the arm up?

(PS -- we are now moved into our Rhills home and love everthing but the garbage/recycling program....we hired our garbage company (something we didn't realize we had to do as at home it's via the city) and decided to pay extra for recycling and compost pick up - the guilt of thorwing out plastics, papers and cans were killing us......soooooo we get our bins delivered and see a HUGE *freakin* HUGE garbage bin for our 10 GARBAGE BAGS A WEEK LIMIT@! Are you kididng me??? TEN !!! Coming from a 2bag limit every two weeks, this seems so much. Then next to it is a little itty bitty recylcing bin....I am doumbfounded! I phone the CService and explained that we would have way more recycling then garbage and she was supportive but couldn't really say how much they would pick up!!! Ok enough venting, lol, we'll deal with it and drive any recycling that isn't picked up to the depot....)

Yes put the red flag up when you place outgoing mail in the mailbox. The point of this is just in case the mailman didn't have any mail for you, and wasn't going to stop at your house this will let them know he needs to stop.

In most places, they sort through your trash and pull out the recycling anyway. There are federal requirements for municipalities to try to meet certain levels of recycling. I never understood why in many places they have us (residents) sort out the recycling and then they sort it again. One place that we lived they dumped it all together anyway and then sorted it again. Really dumb. They did keep the organic (mulch) trash separately. I do not know what they do here. We have the tiny recycling bins here too and they are silly. With 8 people in our household, we generate a lot of trash. We just bag up the recycling and stack it in a pile near the tiny bin, away from the trash. they pick it up seperately, so I assume that it gets recycled. .

If you want to know whether they sort your trash to pick out recyclables, check with your trash company, or go do a tour.
