I am encouraging my husband to seek employment in a warm climate, possibly Austin Texas. We have 2 children in their early teens. I hate winter, MI etc. Our whole family which is not very close lives in MI. I just want out. My husband is willing and my kids say they want to move. Am I crazy?

yes I have been there and love it. My husband works for a construction company. What is the construction industry like in Austin? Has anyone moved their family anywhere on a whim? Usually the people I know with kids move because they are forced to. How are Austin schools?

Austin is a fantastic place. It is very sought after in Texas, so the housing market is MUCH more expensive there than in most other cities in TX. You would need to really do your homework on cost of living. Also, as you would imagine, the nicer areas usually have better schools. I am not sure about Austin ISD, but you should post on the Austin forum. They will give you tons of help.

If your husband has a good job, or actually a job in Michigan I would stay in Michigan. Yes, the Texas economy is good but the entire nation's job market is pretty poor at the moment. If you are not one of the residents of Michigan that is being forced out I would not leave.

If he is in the construction business you might consider Dallas. We probably have the best economy in the US right now with tons of new construction going on especially in my area of Las Colinas / Irving.
You can get a great house with good schools in the 200-300k price range fairly easily.

I'm from Michigan and now live in Richmond Tx (south of Houston) You will find many things to like about Texas but you will miss a lot from Michigan too. As far as construction goes, its steady here in Texas (for now) on the commercial side. I've noticed that residential construction though is way down. If your husband is in the management side of construction and has commercial experience he should be very employable. If he is in one of the trades, he may want to proceed with caution. There are a lot of construction workers already here and work is getting scarcer.

Most of the construction worker are Mexican by the way. This brings down the pay the builders are willing to pay. If you can find someone to speak English good luck on that in this field in TX beside the people running the business. I lived in Houston right outside in Cypress, TX. traffic is worse. Watch out for property taxes wow. Also to get to one half of city is only by a toll road which is one of the most expense toll road in USA. It is more expense than the turnpike.
