Default Response to multiple

I went to Hella's once and did not return due to the HUGE cockroach that ran across my foot as I was eating some mediocre at best hummus.

There's great restauraunts in any sizeable city - you just have to discover them, so there's no feasable argument there really.

I lived in Hamtramck for 2 years as well as over in the Ghetto by Henry Ford Hospital off West Grand Boulevard on Sterling street for 2 years. I can say that I have witnessed a "reverse" drive-by shooting first hand whereby my crack dealer neighbor was shooting at a Ford LTD town car driving in front of my house while using my '76 Caddy sedan deville as cover. That one scared the crap outta me. My neighbor was dead by spring after he was caught trying to deal in another neighborhood about a mile away.

I've lived out in Metro Detroit before and now quite some time after my Detroit adventures and I can tell you that I can't get out of here fast enough. Most all of my friends have moved out of this area already and haven't come back for much more than a few day's visit every 2 or 3 years. Royal Oak is Royal Oak, but frankly I don't see why people (and they aren't too many of them these days) pay for real estate there - especially the lofts they recently built around town. What's the attraction? Where's the river or awesome views of something . . anything?!

I try to make the best out of living here, but I will not last much longer. This area had a soul at one time, but now that energy is mostly gone and won't be back in any sort of foreseeable future.

Come to think of it - what is a "Metro" area anyway? "metro" is from "metra" (mother) spoken by people of Greece starting about 1000 B.C. In this sense, it is a word added to another word to form a new word. Metro is used as a prefix to Detroit - meaning that what is referred to as Metro Detroit is associated WITH Detroit. What happens to a cell when the nucleus rots? Detroit had it's chance many times over. It's obvious that I could go on and on so I'll stop for now.

It IS funny though how someone that doesn't even live here, nor do they want to live here again, says to stop bashing Detroit.

southfield is the new detroit hub. while detroit is in shambles, all the business' just moved down the street. so the metro will be fine.

2013 should be the last year detroit shifts into an office hq hub. it will no longer be an industrial city. i received a report about this 2 years before any of this was going on. it was a 5 year projection and so far it has been dead on.

I really enjoyed living there but without a brighter future it would tough to return. We lost over $100k when we sold our house. However, THE REGION must work together to attract businesses and grow. What ever happens to the auto industry it will not be the same. If I am seeking to relocate a business or start a business, would I choose Metro Detroit, Nashville, or Austin, Texas. The unemploymwnt rates states not Metro Detroit.
I love Detroit and its surrounding areas. I know the state as a whole is having problems but I dont like bashing it because there is so much beauty and potential there. I can see Detroit being back up to greatness before 2020

This is SUCH a typical post from a Detroit-basher.....they all say the same thing. I'm starting to think must be a script that Detroit bashers follow when coming on here to be negative.

First, they tell some outrageous crime/murder story (that may or may not be true) that they either witnessed or know someone who witnessed. Then, they use the line that "EVERYONE I know has moved". Which makes perfect sense, really. A population of 10.1 million (actually an increase from 2000)...makes MI the 8th most populated state. And the population of metro-Detroit is 4.5 million, I believe the 9th largest metropolitan area.
I don't have any close friends or family who have moved, and most have very good, steady jobs.

Then, they branch out and try to bash the entire area. Either they say something like "who cares how nice the area is, if you have to say that its proof Detroit sucks"....OR....they flat out bash the entire area. In this case the latter, saying the area has lost it's soul. The entire area has no soul? What a joke. Do you know how many of Detroits suburbs have made lists of "best place to raise a family" or "high quality of life towns"?

But my FAVORITE is the last line. 75% of the pure bashing of Detroit on this board comes from people who are not from the area, in fact most have never set foot in MI (more times than not it's someone from another big city with a bad rep or a backwoods southern state)....so FINALLY as a breath of fresh air, an outsider comes and tells people to STOP bashing Detroit, and they are criticized for it. Jeezus.

Just curious, do all these close friends and family reside in the actual City of Detroit or are you talking in MI?

I agree there is much negativity surrounding the Detroit are especially. But alot of people have seen it change negatively and are very bitter about it. Can't really blame them.

Personally, I feel so bad that Detroit is rotting away. I wish I had mega bucks, but then it isn't just funding that did this. It is rather sad, don't you think?

Well bub,

I'm here to tell ya that my "crime story" is far from "outrageous". I was upstairs taking a nap one early evening during the winter of '98/'99, after having just moved to the house a month prior, and thought I heard the sound of a door knocker downstairs. I thought to myself, "Do I have a door knocker?" I knew of only one person who knew I lived at this new location so I looked out the window from upstairs to see if I could see his car parked on the street below, to no avail. So I came downstairs to look out of the window at the top of the front door only to see my neighbor firing off his semi - automatic handgun at the Ford towncar driving by. I immediately turned and ran down into the basement in anticipation of a return fire right in front of my house, but there was none. I waited for a few minutes and ran back upstairs to my room where I kept the shotgun (after being advised to keep one handy by a friend - who has since moved ) Next thing I heard was a V-8 engine down shifting into rapid acceleration at the end of the street and was coming my way. I thought, "This is it." Turns out it was gang squad - at the time they drove the unmarked burgundy Crown Vic's with all the antennas on the back. I know this because at that time I had worked in the ER at Henry Ford Hospital on West Grand Boulevard downtown/New Center Area and dealt with giving information to gang squad/homicide everytime someone got their head blown off, but still had a pulse on the scene. So no, snowlvr, I didn't hear the story from someone or whatever you were babblin' about. Additionally, ALOT of my good friends DID move away from this area and still are.

Shouldn't it occur to you that if you keep hearing these stories, that it might just be a true running theme? That being said, why wouldn't it be possible that there is at least some truth, if not total truth, to this stuff you keep hearing from people.

The fact is that 36,000 people have left Detroit since 2005 or so. Furthermore, who gives a crap what the population number is when there's nothing to do (out in the 'burbs) but dinner and a movie for the most part. Every city is going to be good for something and someone'e going to label it as "the best for . . . " fill in the blank. I've got a great job and know others that do too, but that's not the norm. Coleman Young was a wicked man, but there was a qoute I liked when he described Detroit during national economic downturns. He said, "When the rest of the nation has a cold, Detroit has the flu."

Besides, the suburbs you are referring to are NOT Detroit, man! Here's another story for ya that you'll find outrageous as well - I know I did. My now Fiance' and I met some friends downtown to see Seinfeld at the FOX theater. After the show our friends went home, but my fiance wanted to go to Greektown casino. It was a nice night so we decided to walk down Broadway, which is all new now with lights and new buildings like the new huge YMCA. As we neared the end of broadway getting closer to Greektown I thought I heard a gunshot a few blocks back, but pretty much dismissed it - used to hearing it in Detroit and decided it was probably way further off than what it sounded like. So we're walking back to the parking structure on Broadway where we parked - it was around 2:10am. As we were walking by the people mover station just past the new YMCA on Broadway 2 gun shots rang out - I ducked a little and looked off to my left where I saw a ton of people scrambling in a parking lot. Then there was 6 more shots, one right after the other, which had me really ducking and walking quite a bit faster. My fiance was like, "That's the real thing then, huh?" I just told her to walk faster. Were they firecrackers snowlvr? I was happy to see Detroit PD with 2 guys spread and cuffed - bent over the trunk of their squad car by the time we got street level in the truck. We don't go downtown much anymore - it shouldn't be that way. This is why I'm done with Detroit. Just thought of another story that happened by Cadiuex Cafe' on the east side, but I've already posted way too much

I'm tired - G'night
