Today's Free Press almost broke my heart- 137 pages of foreclosures in Wayne County. Approximately 150 notices per page; that's over 25,000 foreclosures.

Wish I could help, but I found this in the paper that was delivered to my door (yeah, I know, it is not green, but I just got to hold that newsprint in my hand first thing in the morning, and I do re-cycle!). That one section was so thick, it was thicker than most mid-week papers.

Just curious - is it possible for the Big 3 to become the economic engines of sustainable energy production?

I'm not just talking hybrids cars, but windmills, solar generators, etc... Look at a business like General Electric. They started out building refrigerators and now dominate all sorts of industries. They diversified. With Obama's big plan for renewables, it seems the Big 3 could position themselves to transition to that rather than just take a handout for a dying market in which people are turning away from suburbia.

If this sounds off topic, it's not. I'm just really concerned about the foreclosures and trying to figure out how to stop the bleeding.

That actually is a rather interesting idea, and as the OP, I think it is germane to the issue. If a bail-out were tied to diversifing into other related technologies, such as windmills and solar generators, it seems like it would be killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. Not only would it help the environment, but developing that technology would also theoretically help the Big 3 develop hybrids and vehicles using alternative energy. Although it is not the same senario, remember that the Big 3 re-tooled to build tanks and airplanes and other military vehicles during WWII. There is no reason that it can't be done again, if the egos get out of the way and get done to business.
