I'll be a student at WSU SOM in the fall, and I'm looking for a place to live. I know a lot of med students live in Royal Oak, but I don't think I want to commute that far every day, with gas at $4+ a gallon. So I was wondering-- what neighborhoods should I be looking at? I'd like to be able to walk around outside without safety issues. (And if I live within walking distance of the medical center, would it actually be safe to walk home from there in the evening, or am I better off driving a short distance?)

Downtown, Midtown, Corktown...I hear are the best. There would have been a time where I would have said Warrendale is pretty good...but it is fastly declining.

Living Around Detroit - So big...please help!
Unfortunately, the Detroit area doesn't really have a transportation system to help save you money on gas. However, you may be able to find a car-pooling buddy on Detroit's Craigslist under "ride-share".

SOM?
How much do you want to spend?
You could easily live within walking distance of campus with little or no safety concerns.
You could catch a SMART bus from Royal Oak quite easily.
You should ask around campus for recommendations.

Call Wayne State Police and ask them for some safer buildings to check out. I wouldn't rely on anyone here until you've been here for yourself. Plenty of areas around Wayne have gated parking, security, etc.
My guess is "School Of Medicine". Or "School of Murder". One or the other.....

i live in midtown right down the street from wsu and the nighborhood is great mix of different races cultures etc and since its wayne state cops are all around so come down 1 day and look at apts on cass, second, and all the side streets in between

A friend of mine lived in the Belcrest apartments, a secured high rise right across from wayne state. I always felt safe there, and I'm downtown alot. There are also a few other other high rises in the area that have secured parking lots and security. Living in a small apartment complex would not be ideal for me in the wayne state neighborhood, although I know many who have and have been fine. Be smart, dont walk around by yourself late at night... etc.

A reply to your question is simple, palmer woods, sherwod forest, green acres, indian village,downtown, midtown, and corktown. If you can't afford that, get a house off of Outer Drive, it's safe but I don't think any middle class people can afford to live downtown, maybe the new center area. As for the communte, if your new to the city, your best bet are the lodge and davison freeways and the main avenues and roads, to me their very simple because their grid-like. try to ride the buses, they go almost everywhere for cheap fare.
