Empty homes slowly decaying | detnews.com | The Detroit News

The city has piles of these on the foreclosure list but at the sale they require back taxes to be paid ( or they price them to pay such off). They aren't worth the back taxes.

Why not start the bidding at $1 and require people to fix them up - give them more than enough time - and get them back on the tax roll?

I would love to live in Boston Edison...if the neighborhood was solid and I had any chance of getting my investment back. I guess it's possible, maybe in 10+ years these homes will be worth it again, but it's so shaky now I just couldn't pull the trigger. Detroit needs people to step up and reinvest back into these neighborhoods, but they can't do it with forcing unreasonable back taxes (and post-sale taxes) on them.

If a dozen people could band together, pick one block in the D, buy the homes up, fix them up, maintain them and then start an association, that could work. But you'd need hundreds of like-minded people to do it, and stick with it.

I don't know what the answers are, but I really wish there was a solution we could get behind.

It's very sad to see Detroit's greatest neighborhoods in decay. I love the houses in Boston-Edison but you drive a few blocks away and you are in acres of blight.

I agree with the poster above about banding together and making an association, if people want to live in a nice city and neighborhood they have to work together and not be selfish.

This site might be just the place to start drumming up a group of people who would like to live an hour closer to work, or closer to Detroit's cultural events, or just closer to the airport. Imagine Detroit's downtown area becoming a fashionable place to have a summer home!

I think Detroit is a gentrificationist's dream. There are still some very nice neighborhoods, but if people can build off of them, I think the city could blossom again. Maybe, it could be a destination for artists and people interested in land banking.

Spin up a map....

Imagine a polygon shape on the map bordered....

From the corner of Gratiot and 7 Mile, south to the corner of Gratiot and East Grand Boulevard, east to the MacArthur Bridge.

From the corner of Gratiot and 7 Mile, east to Hayes, south to Chalmers, to the River.....

Everything Northeast of Hayes/Chalmers goes to the Pointers...

Everything in the poloygon must be demolished.

Demolish the antiquated PM. Install a Dual Maglev System. Stops at the RR Station, GM Building, MacArthur Bridge, Pointers, City Airport, Entertainment District (Midway from the Stadiums & Casinos).

Bring the Marina District Inland to the corner of McCellan & Warren to the corner of Warren and Conner. Toss an island into the mix.

Now here is the tricky part. Lease the area inside the polygon to India or China. They can use it to attend the current universities in Michigan, and later will build new and expanded Universities.

An Global Education Hub if you will.

Thoughts?
