regarding weather, if you like sun, well Louisiana has ALOT of it. In fact heat index was 105 F yesterday. Environmentally, it doesnt really get interesting until well into Northern Louisiana, when the foothills start to become mountains. There is also a real lack of definitive seasons, with summer taking up the better part of 5 months (May - September) and fall and spring not really existing much at all. Winter is VERY short and mild though. But the heat can get really unbearable.

UNemployment here is really low though. Around 6.2% overall and 4.2% in my city. BUt unless you really enjoy Cajun culture and food and outdoor sports like hunting or fishing, you wouldnt find much to do here. I really enjoy those things, so Im very comfortable here (and sweating my butt off aside from thaT) but its not for everyone. I guess whaT Im trying to do here is give osme perspective that while the economy might be treating us a hell of al ot better and jobs are relatively plentiful, the nature side of things here is lacking. There is absolutely no water hsortage to speak of though, and the quality of water is very very good with so much fresh water in lakes and rivers and no desert. BUt it might be TOO much water if you know what I mean. Id personally love to visit Michigan in the fall and see those wonderful colors that we seldom see down here except in small amounts way out in the countryside. Maybe it would be wise to live in an adjacent state to Michigan so you could still enjoy the scenery?

Which policies? Why would they be "leftist"? How is its government "out-of-control"?

High taxes, high regulations, high environmental regulations, weak immigration enforcement, services for illegals, progressive taxation, too many Government workers, paying your Government workers too much, too much power to the unions. These are 'liberal/progressive' tenets. Government is out of control b/c it is too large and over bearing. People have been leaving California (especially for Nevada) left and right. Many of the people leaving California are the net tax and jobs contributors, while those coming in are not as productive.

Aside from the obvious issues, I've always loved the Detroit area. I always manage to have a great time wether I'm in the city or the burbs. Not a lot of people know that Detroit has some of the nicest suburbs in the country. Someone even told me the Detroit suburbs are actually growing in population while the city continues to decline........not sure if that's true or not. The makeover of Metro airport has been fantastic. Just a few years ago it was by far the worst, most run down and outdated major airport around, but the new terminals are probably the nicest I've seen, and I've been to pretty much every major airport in the U.S. Detroit is also the best sports town around......I don't care what anyone says. If you love sports, there is no better place to be than Detroit and Michigan. Same goes for music......very hot music scene in the Motor City...always has been.

I know living in the area is a different animal, but I'm job hunting right now and if I got the right offer from a stable company in the Detroit area I would definitely consider it, even though I'm quite wary of the awful economy down there. Housing is cheaper than ever if you want to buy from what I hear, which is tempting. Detroit is not a town for everyone, and that goes without saying, but I love it because I'm from there and it's important to me to be close to my roots. I think it's a great town in so many ways despite all that is wrong with it. I can definitely see why so many people would be turned off by the area, but I've lived in some of the boom towns in the country and I really prefer an older, more eclectic, interesting town like Detroit to those shiny newer towns where everyone is from somewhere else.

Please tell me where you moved to and why you hate it so much? I am from the UK and I am contemplating moving with my husband to Michigan. I will already have a job set up as a nurse when I go.

I would really appreciate your comments as all I have heard so far is positive!
