City leaders are exploring whether they can recoup millions of dollars paid to a federal monitor after text messages revealed she rendezvoused with former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick over at least 18 months.

Officials on Monday said they're exploring legal action after the U.S. Justice Department shared text messages with them showing a "personal relationship" between the former mayor and Sheryl Robinson Wood, who resigned last week as the monitor overseeing Detroit police reforms.

Kwame sits in a mansion in Texas while so many involved with him are fighting for their careers and freedom. This guy has cost Detroit so much money and it seems to not be stopping soon. Well one good thing now is that this case with the monitor is Federal. I hope she fights the charges in court.

From the Det News story:
"Initially, the monitor's fee was $250 an hour, but she successfully lobbied for a 15 percent pay bump to $287.50 an hour. Her fees were supposed to decline as the city implemented reforms, but after six years, she found the department had met only 73 of 203 provisions of the decree.
As of June, the monitor was paid $180,000 a month by the city...."

Paid a humungous sum of money to expose corruption and oversee police reform - according to that study, at least TEN MILLION DOLLARS through 2006 alone.
I am speechless. (Well almost, but nice people shouldn't use that sort of language.)

Jail them both and seize every asset they have.

We can always have protestors and agitators rally on Kwame's Texas front lawn (they have a legal right to protest outside of one's house, right?) - they could also pass leaflets to let neighbors know that this man is a crook and a *********.

I suspect that on the day we finally clear up all the Kwame debris and put all the money back where it belongs, Detroit is no longer going to be in the red at all! How much trouble can one person cause!!!

But of course he's had a lot of help digging himself into this hole. This whole situation reminds me of the book I read over the weekend on the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire. The only man punished for the fire (with 3 years in prison to pay for 492 deaths) was the club's owner, who was in the hospital with a heart attck the night of the fire. But his brother, who was running the place that night, and the head bartender, who didn't unlock any of the fire doors when the fire started, went free. So did the fire inspectors who hadn't been by in over 10 years despite several renovations, the building-code people who let the fire-doors regulation drop by the wayside, the licensing people who took the owner's brother's word for it that everything was shipshape, the building contractors who agreed to cover 2 of the fire exits with coat-check rooms so even the coat-check girls couldn't use those doors to escape -- there were a LOT of people responsible for that disaster. And there are a lot of people responsible for this one, too.
