Looking to take one of many trips this year. My next destination will be detroit. Can anyone narrow down what areas are considered "safe", and what areas are viewed as "unsafe"? Thanks!

If you're going to go Downtown... stick to the woodward/Jefferson area. Places like the museum district, Greektown, are great. If you want the night life and casinos, this is also just about your area. It's nice.

Do you have kids, coming for business, etc? Tell me more about your trip, I live in the city and might have some points to hit or stay away from.

Stay in the downtown vicinity. Most of downtown is safe, especially if you are with someone else. The absolute safest areas in Detroit are the more touristy areas obviously. Like Greektown, the Riverfront, Campus Martius Park, Woodward Av. Mexicantown is south of downtown and is in a little bit more "run down" atmosphere, especially being so close to the Delray neigbhorhood.

Yeah, the casinos can be fun. But your really not experiencing the real Detroit.

Also, I would suggest Belle Isle if the weather permits.

What they said. And try not to venture off the beaten path too much unless you are with a local.

What about neighborhoods/areas like English Village, Indian Village, the University District, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest and the Woodward corridor?

These are safer than average Detroit neighborhoods, but I would not really call them safe, at least not compared to downtown or the suburbs.

I certainly wouldn't recommend taking an evening stroll around the University District or down the Woodward corridor, LOL.

Get a hotel Downtown. If you want to take a trip into the ghetto (if you're feeling lucky) take Gratiot all the way until you reach East Pointe. (It'll be fine there) Once you reach EastPointe, turn around and keep going until you reach Bringard. Bringard is in Detroit, but you'll be safe there. You can take it to Kelly Rd, then on to the Interstate, or just take Gratiot back Downtown.
Midtown has all the museums, a bowling alley, restaurants. New Centre has a bunch of historic places to visit.
Places not to go: If you want to visit Ol' Tiger stadium, take the way through Corktown or Mexican town. Anywhere else could be considered bad. The immediate Westside is pretty bad (It gets progressively better in the Far Westside) On the Eastside, it could be considered worse but has all the tourist spots. moderately well, if you will. Stay off of Gratiot and you probably won't experience any problems.
If you want to check out Indian Village, you should console a tour guide.
Sherwood Forest and the Palmers are good aswell. Downtown should be where you stay the most, though.
Be aware, there are a couple spots that get jumpy at night, when the nightclubs play music and the bar fills with post-grads from Wayne State.
If you want good foodz, check out Lafayette Coney Island, on West Lafayette, It's easily reached from Woodward, near the parks (Grand Circus, Campus Martius). Fun Fact, Lafayette is next to a boarded up building, the boards actually have murals on them! I think Tyrese made it. Which reminds me, you MUST go see the Heidelberg. It's a giant Mindf*ck.
Well, I hope that helps you.

I would agree with all the above, and would add the RenCen - I personally think it's a great building and facility, though the Marriott there isn't as great as it looks from the outside.
If you like sports, it's always an entertaining safe bet to take in the Tigers, Wings or Lions (okay, maybe the Lions are only entertaining to the visiting team!). Even though Joe Louis arena is full of history and atmosphere, I have to say Comerica park is my favorite of the local sports venues.
Finally, if you're coming in the summer, there are lots of great outdoor eateries/pubs downtown as well going north up Woodward, and a few gems out on Michigan Ave. near the old Tiger Stadium. Michigan Ave. looks abandoned and run down, but there are a surprising number of really good, unique pubs/restaurants down that way.
