??? You are not going to be able to commute 2-3 days/week from New Jersey to Michigan. That's about an 11 hour drive. A train (if there is one) would be no faster.

If you work for the federal govt in Detroit, you can live in some nice neighborhoods in the city for relatively cheap housing prices. My uncle works for the GSA in downtown Detroit and lives in Boston-Edison in a huge house. For people who have stable jobs, living in Detroit is quite cost-effective compared to living on the East Coast where I live.
