You'll probably be able to purchase more home for your money in Farmington Hills than you would in the swankier surrounding suburbs--West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, Novi, Walled Lake, and Commerce.

I'm not sure how the crime rate compares to those swankier suburbs, especially the southeast portion of Farmington Hills/Farmington (which might have some iffy apartment complexes). The southeast area also borders Southfield and Redford and is closer to Detroit, which could endanger the long-term value of the property since the southeast is probably the part of the city that will go downhill first.
Yes, I lived in a sub off Inkster, and the demographics were much like Southfield. Many subs on the east side are upwards of 60-70% black. White flight is hitting east FH hard. That said, it's a large city and there are many very nice neighborhoods on the northwest side. They are quite expensive, though.

60-70 percent black?? More like 10-15. My mom still lives on the east side of Farmington Hills(11 Mile & Middlebelt) and it's majority white. There are def more black, asian, arab, indian families than who was there when I was growing up(1980s and 90s) but its still white middle class.

I agree with you about the SE section of Farmington Hills(8 Mile & Inkster) It's always been poor looking compared to the rest of the city. And yes, Inkster road is quite the dividing line. The subdivisions along Inkster in Southfield are very nice and those are 70 percent or more black. But this has already been discussed. Southfield is a middle class black community.

Remember, Farmington Hills is a large suburb(approx. 82,000) With Farmington mixed in the middle...that raises it to around 100,000 residents.

With all that being said, do I think the east side of FH will probably change alot more in the next 10 years...yes!! This happens everywhere in every community in the USA.

i lived at middlebelt and nine mile several years ago. nice neighboor hood, some of them are nice nieghboors, not all of them. but if you need anything you could just go right down the road to target.. it was new when i lived there. but overall, id say good choice. if i were you, i would choose a spot further north though...

I am considering moving to Farmington Hills next summer, and will continue to research area. I would like to know what areas would be good to move toward or to stay away from. I also would like to know if anyone knows of any good daycares or before and after school programs in that area. ALSO I am moving in that area to be closer to the university, where i will finish school, so I will be living in an apartment for a year. So what areas would be suitable. Thanks for all responses!

What university are you going to? Will your children be attending schools? How much is your price range for a rental? I am not familiar with daycare other then there are a lot in the area.
I think the more desirable areas of FH are around 13/14 mile and Haggerty area though I think near cities have better schools though. The area I stated in FH's has a lot of affordable apartment rentals. You are close to the shopping mall,m-5 expressways etc as well. As you go towards lower mile roads in FH it becomes less desirable. Not to say it unsafe though.

I live at Orchard Lake and Shiawassee...quite close to your target area. The area is safe and attends Farmington schools, not Clarenceville (big plus). It is not one of the priciest areas in the city but it is a good starter area and I have noticed a high rate of occupancy with relatively few foreclosures in the neighborhood. I would suggest this area as a nice way to get into the Farmington schools for relatively little money.

I was gassing up at 7PM last night at 12 mile and middlebelt. A Beggar (in a Cadillac) came to me with his VA ID and said "I come in Peace. I left my wallet behind."

"Sorry."

I lived in Metro Detroit up until 2001 so my opinion may be a bit out of date but..

As far as I know, Farmington Hills is your typical upper middle class American suburb. Most areas are safe although there could be a few sketchy areas but chances are, if you threw a dart at a map of Farmington Hills, it'll land in a neighborhood with an acceptable level of safety.

Farmington Hills is a very safe suburb. It's pretty big by population but there are no dangerous parts of that city.

A strange resurrection of a 10+ year old thread. But I thought I'd give my recent update as a Southfield resident living on the border of Farmington Hills. I travel there often to shopping and visit parks in Farmington Hills in various parts of the city (including Farmington). Some parts are clearly nicer than others and but I have never felt unsafe in Farmington Hills.

Sure, it has some crime and some older houses. But the city has over 80,000 people and in relation to that crime rates are low.
