Hello,

Can someone please provide me some insight on Van Buren Township. I'll be relocating from Atlanta, GA suburbs for a possible job opportunity. I'm interested in hearing about the winter, the surrounding areas, etc. My wife and I are in the mid-thirties with two kids (2yr and 10 months). We want to begin building roots for our kids and prefer living in the suburbs. We like diversity and enjoy going out and tasting varieties of foods and going to a nice mall once in awhile. Most importantly, my wife like to go to Asian supermarket for grocery shopping. So, please let us know which suburbs or areas are nice to raise our kids. Thanks for your responses.

I don't know much about Van Buren Township, but Plymouth and Northville are two towns just north of there that are very nice and seem to be family-oriented and very safe.

The Official Website of the City of Northville, Michigan (MI)

Plymouth MI - Official Website

I would happily live in either of these suburbs.

I have lived here for almost 10 years now. There is a wide variety of homes and lifestyles available. There are clusters of brand-new homes and subdivisions, along with rural homes on acreage. Van Buren township is very wide-spread, and right in the middle of the of the township is the small city of Belleville - where the homes are quaint and much closer together. There is a large lake (Belleville Lake) which is just south of I-94. Even though most of it borders Belleville, it belongs to the township. Due to the housing slump, you can pick up a very nice home for under-market value.

Ann Arbor is 15-20 minutes away, which would cover any major shopping malls or unique dining experiences. Canton Township is 5-10 minutes south with a variety of shopping also. Even though there has been an increase in new subdivisions in the last 15 years or so, they try very hard to maintain a more rural feel in the south end of the township (south of I-94). Hope this helps!

I lived there for 8 years - just moving for work last year. I lived in one of the new subs in a beautiful home. Loved the slower pace that surrounded us, but we were still close to Ann Arbor and I didn't have a bad commute to Dearborn or Plymouth for work.

I loved the area - low crime, friendly neighbors, the National Strawberry Festival, the lake nearby. BUT - There are still some very rural areas and because it is an area in transition, there's a huge battle for tax dollars to support the schools.

I wouldn't send my kids to school there. My last graduated a few years ago and it was beginning to get bad then.

The high school is extremely old and VERY, VERY overcrowded, but they can't get the bond approvals needed to build a new one. It's also plagued with issues you'd expect in larger cities: students who don't have the drive to excel and go on to higher education opportunities far, far outnumber those who do.

I would seek out the communities the poster above mentioned: Canton Township, Plymouth/Plymouth Township or Northville.

Here's information on the schools there: Test Scores for Van Buren Public Schools | GreatSchools

You also have private options close by in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and in some of the other suburbs close by too.

Lincoln Consolidated in Ypsilanti might work too: http://www.greatschools.org/cgi-bin/...ct-profile/497
I believe it gets kids from more rural areas close to Ypsilanti and is right next to Van Buren/Belleville. I believe some kids from sumpter Township, which is in Wayne County, go to school there. http://www.lincoln.k12.mi.us/

Milan just south of Ypsilanti might work too: http://milanareaschools.org/

Plymouth-Canton is a very good SD close by too: http://www.pccs.k12.mi.us/

Novi might work and 25% of the students there are Asian: http://www.greatschools.org/cgi-bin/...ct-profile/578

Does anyone know the property taxes in Plymouth, Norville, or Van Buren Townships?
