I am currently a student in Texas studying art. I know it's impossible to find a job in Detroit, but since I can work online I figure, "Why not?" Any advice when looking for real estate or areas to avoid would help.

Josh

Hmmm. I should try doing some home growing here in Texas. I'm sure once I get into it I'll like it. The money I save on food will be a bonus too.

What made you decide you wanted to move to Detroit?

When you say East Detroit,do you mean the east side of the city of Detroit? Eastpointe which used to be East Detroit? The east side of the metro area?

I grew up on the East side and miss it daily. There is a ton of stuff to do, and a great place to start on online (or any other kind of) business. Even the nicest neighborhoods, alas, probably have more than their share of foreclosure properties that you can pick up for a song.

If you haven't been lurking much on this forum, people are asking you about farming because that's the hippest trend in Motown. They never changed the old laws dating back to the 1800s or earlier about having livestock and so on in your backyard in the city, so it's perfectly legal to have a few goats or a chicken house at your place there. Because there are so many foreclosure properties literally selling for a buck downtown, people are buying up a bunch of them at a time and going into, you know, beekeeping and stuff. It's really an awesome idea.

Except that I live in fear they're gonna rename my favorite city "Mootown."

When I read the post I was thinking the same question.

Does this mean "east side" Detroit neighborhoods or the City of East Detroit, which is know "Eastpointe".

I would avoid the east side neighborhoods of Detroit at all costs, the houses that remain are badly blighted or burned out, crime is very high, and most of the area, as others have mentioned are urban empty lots.

The City of Eastpointe, which is on the "east side" of the metro area in Macomb County is still a fairly nice place to live. Even though some of Detroit's problems are slowly creeping into Eastpointe (foreclosures), it is still a nice area to live in.
