Very convenient location with good amenities (I-75 access and shopping). I think the area is very safe. The only drawback I think is the traffic. I believe Maple and Big Beaver can get really busy during the day. Other than that I can't think of anything wrong.

I agree about the traffic, and the airport is there too. But it is a safe area.

I am going to write the same as the other posters. I go through that area daily in my commute. It is a good area but the traffic can get a little congested. Other than that it is very nice.

This is a great area. You are near lots of shopping (Troy and Birmingham). There are also nice parks in the area for children.

I'm not 100% familiar with the area, but Troy is a very, very safe city with a slight urban vibe, and great schools.

Mike987, the area that you have circled is entirely apartments. I believe that it's all Somerset Place Apartments, but there might be one or two other small apartment complexes squeezed in at the south end of the area.

This area is located directly south of the Somerset Collection, which is the upscale shopping mall for SE Michigan. To the south east is an open air shopping "district" containing stores that are less "upscale" than those found in Somerset Collection (Target, Old Navy, Dunham's Sporting Goods, Home Depot). Directly south along Maple Road is the area that the city of Troy zoned for all new car dealership, informally known as the Troy Motor Mall. To the north east along Big Beaver Road is Troy's Golden Mile, containing many office buildings. All of this means that you'll have high traffic during morning and evening rush hours. During the Christmas shopping season, it gets even worse - Traffic can get congested from 4:00 PM right up until 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM.

On the other hand, it is a very safe area, with plenty of stores and restuarants nearby for shopping and for socializing. If you golf, the aparment complex has its own nine hole course. If you have kids, Troy's schools and parks system are very good, however, the closest park/playground is actually two blocks west and located in a residential Birmingham neighborhood. And if you want to do the small downtown experience, Birmingham's city center is about 2.5 miles to the west.

Troy is one of the better sections of Detroit.

That's a pretty safe, affluent area. As far as the surrounding neighborhoods go, it's pretty decent. Clawson to the east, Troy to the north and Birmingham to the west. As you go south on Coolidge, particularly south of the airport and before you hit Woodward, it gets grittier and more industrial, but driving through and shopping there is still safe. Wouldn't suggest buying a house down Coolidge from there, nor sending your kids to school there. If you're going to buy a house on Coolidge, you should probably stay north of 14 Mile. or south of Webster (12 1/2 through Berkley)

The airport and train tracks are awful noisy, but after a year or two you learn to get over it. Somerset's a good mall, and the shopping centers around there have a good combination of chains and independent stores. Looking at the other neighborhoods you've asked for advice on, I'd probably take this one over any other.

I live near that area. I love it. I can hit Birmingham and Clawson downtown within minutes. Birmingham and Troy are nice, safe cities and have great schools.
