Being relatively poor, I have been looking at real estate in Detroit. There seems to be some very nice houses for amazing prices around Palmer Park and the golf club, along Riverside street or around that area. I have been reading a lot of bad stuff about Detroit but being from DC I am familiar with good and bad neighborhoods (I am white and live in a nice neighborhood just a few blocks from housing projects and open air drug markets) so I don't think it is possible that all of Detroit can be bad. Would this area of Detroit be reasonably safe, walking distance to shopping, schools, etc? Any information will be appreciated.

Sure, but some of it is the area across Woodward from Palmer, which contains some of the worst blight in the city.

You might also like the Indian Village, East English Village, Rosedale Park and Sherwood Forest neighborhoods, among others within the city of Detroit. This might give you an idea of other neighborhoods within the city and their locations:

Palmer park is great. However do not just look at purchase prices, Know your taxes and other fees. Palmer park has its own security force. Who pays for that?

A lot of those older homes are from Palmer Woods and Palmer Park, where the thread author is looking at. Problem is, this:
W Hollywood, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan 48203 - Google Maps is DIRECTLY across 7 and Woodward from Palmer. That's the problem with Detroit's disappearing neighborhoods. You never know how it is just around the corner.
