I'll be visiting the Detroit area this weekend. My grand parents live in suburban Detroit, (actually the suburb is quite far from Detroit-almost half way to Ann Arbor from Detroit). But everytime I have gone to Detroit area, I have only spent my time in the suburban areas. I would like to see the city this time. It's been 11 years since I have seen Detroit.

What are some things I could possibly do/see in Detroit?

Any nice museums, theaters, etc..?

Also, I'm South Asian (Indian) do you guys have any suggestions for any good South Asian restaurants? I don't really like South Indian food much, but my family wants to try one in Detroit this weekend.

Anyways, can any of you guys help?

It would help by hearing a little about your interests! Detroit is a massive city with droves of opportunities! There's always something going on!

As for museums, the city has quite a few auto museums as well as tours of the assembly plants which are always fascinating if you're into cars. There are good music and live theatre venues all over the city, I'd suggest Ticketmaster and the city website for schedules on shows.

Go to a Tiger's game! It's an inexpensive, but ALWAYS fun event! Maybe you'll get to see a perfect game called right! :P

As for food, I'm not very familiar with south Asian in Detroit but there is a HUGE population of south Asians in the area, so anywhere in Detroit-Dearborn should be pretty good!

Also, Celtics, not Lakers, bud

I agree with UK. Detroit is a fun city with a vibrant, drivable downtown. You can find a lot to do there.

Well, I have a pretty diverse list of things I like. Theater, art galleries, museums, architecture, rivers (river walks, etc..), urban landscape, pretty much anything.

Sounds like a great idea. I'll look into some of these today. Possibly research some downtown attractions.

Haha, are they playing this weekend?

It's alright, I'm not really into the whole South Asian thing. My parents like testing Indian restaurants in nearly every city we go to lol! But yeahhh I'll look into it. Chicago to Detroit is quite a drive, so I have some time to do research. Quick stop at my old school in Ann Arbor and see the campus and such will help give me some time to look things up as well.

Haha no way, normally the only cities I support for sports are Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, & San Antonio. Haha, tonight's going to be a bad night for Boston. Lakers!
Also, anyone know if Windsor, Canada has stuff to see/do?

Windsor has plenty of drinking/gambling fun if you're under 21 :P It's the Tijuana of Detroit :P

As for your interests, hang around downtown. Test both Coney Islands and Slow's BBQ and go for a walk along the Detroit River. It's a beautiful stroll! Venture into the RenCen and see the new Chevy models they have on display in the museum of sorts in the basement, pick up some souveniers, it's one of the most recognizable and beautiful pieces of architecture that can be seen in a skyline in the midwest.

I'm not sure if they're playing this weekend but ESPN should have the schedule posted online. Tickets for bottom section seating right behind 3rd was 19$ per person for me!

Detroit has a few notable museums for art and other things, they should be listed online or on any Detroit/Wayne Co. site.

THe DIA (Detroit INstitute of Arts) is considered one of the top art museums int he country. Definitely worth a visit if you like art.

Monday night is the Detroit Windsor fireworks celepbration. It is amazing. You will not likely see a fireworks display like it. There will be 500,000 to a million people downtown for this so arrive early. Fireworks begin around 9:30. I suggest that you eat dinner at Slows, but be prepared for a 2-3 hour wait. That is absurd, but lot of people are willing to wait that long. It is that good.

Henry Ford Mueseum and GreenField villiage ar really neat. It is an all day thing to do. A huge place with lots of really neat things to see and do. That is also where you can get a tour of the River Rouge Ford plant. That is supposed to be impressive as well.

Greektown is lively and can be fun. Eastern Market durign the day is pretty neat. There are three large casinos, MGM it the fancy one. Greektown is probably the next nicest and then Motor City Casino.

There is a pottery shop called Puabic Pottery that interests some people. Look it up online.

Some people are impressed by the Renaissance Center. I like the Fisher building and the Guardian building better.

Guardian is beleived to be the place where the countrys bankers met and decided to ask the president to close the banks at the start of the Great depression.
