ORLANDO, Fla., May 18 (UPI) -- Citrus fruits may have a compound in their peels that could help diabetes patients and even prevent the disease, researchers say.

The compound, called emulin, was discovered while researching the weight-loss properties of grapefruit, WKMG-TV in Orlando, Fla., reported Sunday.

This insulin mimetic (emulin) has been known for some time and at least one company is trying to market it as a food additive. This unidentified study is likely part of the strategy to show the substance actually does what they claim.

I take at least one diabetic pill that says not to eat grapefruit with it. However, the report you posted indicated it was in the peel, and people usually don't eat that part.

In any case, it is about the fourth or fifth food derivative substance that has been declared a "breakthrough" this year. I am frankly unexcited. Usually these publicity bursts are designed to raise more money or sell stock.

Nevertheless, I am happy you posted it. I'll go over to the ADA site to see what is being said about it (if anything) in their forums. We hear claims like this almost weekly.
