Net Carbs = Total Carbs - Dietary Fiber - Sugar Alcohols.
The reasoning is that dietary fiber and sugar alcohols will pass through your system without "sticking" around. As a result, I always compare net carbs of similar food items. Example: last night, when shopping at Pathmark, two different brands of tortillas had net carbs of 10gms and 17gms per serving size. I went with the lower net carb one.
[Of course, I also check the ingredients carefully. I'll go with higher net carbs if the ingredients are healthier. That rarely happens.]
Ok so let me see if I am following this correctly. Here is an example. I eat one Ole Xtreme wellness spinach and herb tortilla. It's 74 calories, 2 g fat, no cholesterol , no sugar. 17 total carbs and dietary fiber 12g. So basically I count only 5 carbs? It's a healthy tortilla so what do you mean you go with the higher carbs.
Sorry for so many questions but I think I have been figuring my carbs all wrong. I have never subtracted anything.
Oh wow that makes me feel fat lol. It's hard to completely get rid of all sugar as so many things have some in it. But I have reduced it greatly this past week and I will continue to do so.
I weighed myself this morning. I am only down a pound and a half from last Monday, but that's something I guess. I did my run/walk 40 minutes 3 times last week. Went on a six mile bike ride one day (strenuous I might add) and then a 4 mile bike ride this morning. NOw I just need to work in some strength training at home.
I wasn't trying to make you feel fat. I just want to show that if you take an "annual" view of things, the calories add up. Four heaping teaspoons of sugar a day add up to 7 lbs a year. That's an example of how people wonder "how did I gain weight" when that candy bar a day habit started a year ago.
As for meals, Google into "eating clean" -- basically lean meats, vegetables (broccoli, spinach, cabbage), and "good fat", and low to moderate carbs (depending on how less carbs drive you crazy)
I agre on the clean eating. I go for complex carbs. I dont like fruit (except in smoothies) so that works for me.

IMO, air popped (with an air popper) is the best. Its my nightly snack if I need one. I've actually been sitting here thinking of making some to take to work for a snack tomorrow

I love ice cream but decided I will either eat one of those "skinney cow" sugar free ice creams or I found this coconut cream fruit bar by dreyers that seems to be pretty healthy. Low sugar etc. I crave ice cream every day, not just Sunday ...
Your body needs some kind of "fuel" before you work out. One thing I've read with the clean eating is to drink a glass of water before any food goes in your mouth (I know its weird, but it helps keep me from getting constipated- sorry TMI). Oatmeal is great! For ice cream, I will have to find it but there is a recipe that has watermelon, cantelope, and cucumber done in a frozen pop. Also go here Search Results they have some good ideas too. Actually alot of the recipes in this magazine my family has really enjoyed! Sounds funny, but I really look forward to the new issues each time they come out.

Yes you are correct. You would count it as 5 carbs. To reduce your carb intake even further, use lettuce leaves instead of a tortilla. I make my burritos and tacos that way now. I don't miss the tortillas as it's the fillings that have all the flavor.

I know you weren't, I was just kidding, but also I didn't realize that sugar would do all that...7lbs a year wow. Definitely candy and chocolate are off my list.

That's a good idea. I am enjoying these tortillas right now with vegetables in them, maybe when I tire of them I will try lettuce. My tortilla with the vegetables and a spoonful of fat free sour cream is only 3.8 points on my w. watchers. I think I have had it for dinner the last two weeks.

Cava is correct. And thanks for the lettuce suggestion. Never thought of that.
@Chickrae - so long as the tortilla has whole wheat as the first ingredient followed by spinach and herbs, you are good. The ones I don't buy are ones where manufacturers put in chemical sounding ingredients (sodium hexa....whatever...as an example) that you would need a chemistry book to figure out. That Ol Extreme looks pretty good at 5 carbs per serving.
The tortilla says whle wheat flour, water, cellulose fiber, wheat gluten, virgin olive oil, spinach seasoning and so on but I don't see anything too bad..
Ok I am down 2 pounds from Sept 12 when I started this, but I gave in last night and ate a peanut butter snickers snack candy bar. It's my husbands fault because he said "there is no chocolate in the house" so I bought a bag. I wasn't even craving it. Ok I had two....never again...I ran extra minutes today lol
