That used to be the case for me. But once I started eating healthy, most unhealthy food tastes too salty, or too....something. I actually crave salads and roasted veggies.

One day a week, I allow myself to eat whatever I want. I chose a slice of pizza from my favorite pizza place. Two things shocked me: 1. I couldn't finish the slice. 2. It was so greasy and ....heavy. It just wasn't a "must have" for me anymore.

When I was fat, I ate without realizing what I was eating half the time. Once I started noticing what I put in my mouth, and slowed down enough to actually taste it, I realized that food that I loved when I was fat didn't taste all that good.

I actually don't like sweets that much; I like the chemical reaction that occurs in my body when I eat the doughnut or the candy. I ate more for emotional response than anything.

I'll third the almonds. Sometimes I mix the almonds with raisins and some dark chocolate chips.

I love almonds. Unfortunately my dental bridge doesn't. Hard nuts are, sadly, not an option unless they've been slivered.

once again - most fruits have less sugar, and more nutrients, and in particular more fiber, than most candies and similar.

Even the American Diabetes Association is supportive of eating less candy and more fruit.

to the OP

what you should substitute for sweets, depends on A. Are you trying to lose weight, or maintain B. What other nutritional concerns do you have (some of us are trying to avoid sat fat, some think sat fat is fine, some want to limit sodium, some don't, some dont like grains, or wheat in particular, some have no issues with wheat, some avoid synthetic chemicals religiously, some of us make that a lower priority)

For weight loss - best bet is veggies - baby carrots, celery stalks, broccoli florets, are all easy and can be snacked on.

Otherwise, nuts of all kinds are great.

If you are not doing a low carb or low grain thing, popcorn and pretzels can be good choices.

if you can deal with something messier, and want a dip, theres hummus.

If dairy fits in, cheese cubes, or cheese sticks, or whatever could work. If meat works better for you, I suppose there is beef jerky and similar.

If you are fine with high sugar, but want something more natural than processed candy, theres dried fruit.

Not that I'll never eat sweets again, just not every single day. Maybe twice a month.

What kinds of good healthy snacks, other than fruit( I already eat plenty), can I replace the sweets with?
Go with "raw food" alternatives. Check out your local health food store.
I love chocolate. One great chocolate thing I found was this dark cocoa/goji berries/flaxseed energy bars at my local organic grocery.

Of course you have to pay attention to the amount. With the raw alternatives though you are getting nutrition with your sweets and not just empty calories. They also tend to be actually rather filling compared to traditional treats.

Another great snack to have is dehydrated veggies:
Dried Vegetables - Just Tomatoes, Etc.!

Its like chips but good for you.

Its easiest if you make a list of what you eat that is unhealthy and then hunt down the healthier alternatives. There are a lot of options these days.

I love corn chips but replaced them with corn chips with flaxseed. Its more filling than traditional corn chips and flaxseed is good for you.
