Everything I read says beans suppress appetite and fill you up, because of the fiber and decent amount of protein.

But for me, beans make me hungrier Is there anyone else like that?

I LOVE beans, and when I eat them can't get enough. You'd think they were Chinese food, the way I'll go back a half our later for more beans.

People always praise the fiber and protein in beans but -- BY FAR -- they still are mostly carbohydrate. I'm talking about the most common beans (Pinto, black, kidney, garbanzo, etc -- not soybeans).

I never thought of myself as super carb sensitive or anything like that. I mean I like bread and french fries as good as the next person, but I'm not really addicted to them or get any particular cravings about them.

So I wonder why beans make me eat more. It's a bummer because I've sort of given them up because of that.
They seem to be such a perfect food for weight control, but for me they have the opposite effect.

I love beans - black bean burgers, lentil soup, split pea and ham, hoppin john...

But, sadly, I don't seem to be able to lose much weight when I have beans in my diet so I really have to limit them.

slhars - there are two different kinds of carbs - simple and complex....complex carbs (beans for instance) take the longest to digest and therefore keep you fuller longer.

I eat beans several times a week but I pair them with lots of vegetables...I love tostadas made with a corn tortilla (microwaved about 2 minutes or until it is crisp), then I put spread about 1/2 to 2/3 of a cup of refried non-fat vegan black beans (mixed with salsa, garlic powder and diced canned ortega or jalapeno peppers), finely sliced purple cabbage, heirloom tomatoes, 1/4 of a sliced ripe avocado, salsa, cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice (once in a while I'll sprinkle the top of the tostada with 1/4 cup diced fresh pineapple....I'll eat one of these with some steamed broccoli with lemon pepper (no butter)....it is so filling and delicious...no cholesterol, very low fat and full of fiber.

How are the beans prepared? That is likely to explain your experience. Its difficult to over-eat on beans when there isn't added junk to them, they aren't that high in calories.

Beans are great food, but I eating them to reduce appetite doesn't make much sense. If prepared without added junk they are a food with a moderately amount of calories so should full you up without making you fat. But reduce appetite?
