Hell, even Andrew Wakefield's work made it past peer review at one point, lol.
Part of the problem is that the average person does not know how to read a research paper (ie. not just skimming the abstract), interpret the data, understand the context and limitations, or which journals are legitimate and which ones are predatory open-access journals.
