Before they gained weight they had defined muscle from almost a decade of exercising. something bad happened and they were out of comission (unable to exercise) for more than 2 years.
They are 6'1 and male.
Before weight gain they were 205 ibs.
Current weight is 280 ibs.
Their planed exercise plan for the first two months:
daily
1.5 hours elliptical machine
and these two videos from you tube
also some occasionally strength training 1 or 2 times a week.
2000 calories a day diet. plenty of fruits and vegetables. no sugar. occasionally nuts to be eaten as the 'new junk food'. only meats are chicken breast and salmon. no breaking of the diet.
is 2.5 months a reasonable amount of time to expect to get back to original weight.
There is no way on gods green earth you are losing 70+ pounds in two and a half months. Just let that idea go right now. It took you two years to put the weight on, don't expect it to just go away in a flash. You made this bed, now you have to sleep in it, there aren't any shortcuts.
The title of this thread shows a disconnect from reality on your part. Your exercise plan should not be the focus, exercise doesn't really matter that much. It's a supplemental thing, not the main event. Caloric intake and food makeup are the main act. Think of exercise like the turbo on a car engine. By itself it doesn't do jack sh**, it needs a good engine(diet). And that analogy really only applies to weight training, not a little elliptical work.
2k calories is the max you should go. You have to be in a solid deficit to lose weight at any kind of decent rate. You don't have to do 1.5 hours on the elliptical every day, if you want to do it for cardiovascular health then go for it(daily running is still un necessary), but losing or not losing the weight will be the result of your eating. Adding in the videos, thats 3 hours of exercise a day. That's making this harder then it needs to be, which in turn will make your odds of actually sticking to it and losing all the weight go down. Plus, caloric deficits and hours of exercise do not go well together. It's always better (and easier) to chop a couple hundred calories off your daily intake then rely on daily exercise.
People over estimate calories burnt in exercise and under estimate how many calories they are eating, generally speaking.
It is a great idea to stay away from sugar for awhile, you are likely insulin resistant(meaning when you eat carbs your body pumps out a ton of insulin to handle your blood sugar so you don't keel over. In a nutshell, insulin=energy storage/the ceasing of fat oxidation). A Paleo style diet will do wonders for you (meat and veggies). It's also hard to over eat when your diet is made up of mostly protein(it is satiating), good luck actually eating 2k calories of protein and veggies per day.
Since OP posted a month and a half ago, maybe he will update us on how his diet and exercise plan is working for him, and how close to his goal he is.
