In order to build 5 - 10 pounds of muscle in a year, besides increasing your protein you have to eat more than you burn. It's difficult to actually increase your body mass very much without an excess of calories. This is why bodybuilders go thru bulking/cutting cycles. They bulk, which is eating more calories than they burn for a certain number of months, during which time they do gain weight - some of it muscle and some of it fat. Then they go thru a certain number of months cutting (eating fewer calories than they burn) in order to strip off the fat they just added, being careful to try and cut off as little of the new muscle as possible. Bulking is the only way someone can put on significant amounts of muscle. Weight lifting newbies can build some muscle while in a calorie deficit for the first few months, but it wouldn't be 5 to 10 pounds worth unless the newbie is starting out very overweight.
