I think many more people are realizing this... or at least I hope they are. If you are trying to lose weight, you are wasting your time running five miles if you eat too much food. Sure exercise can speed up your metabolism and burn some extra calories, but it's not as effective as eating less food.

I love how all these gyms now claim you can burn thousands of calories with fitness classes. I have even heard some say that an hour of Zumba can burn up to 1,000 calories! Ha! Maybe if you weigh 400 lbs.

Getting fit and maintaining fitness is one of the biggest indicators of whether or not someone will maintain weight loss.

Additionally, a consistent program of diet AND exercise together is the best way to lose weight.

I've even heard it postulated recently that you don't have to eat at regular intervals in order to keep your metabolism up. This is heresy!

I have been saying that on this forum for a while. People always give me flack for it but it is true. There are very good reasons to exercise.

1. To keep your heart healthy
2. To improve your bone density
3. To lower your blood pressure
4. To improve your bloodwork (cholesterol, triglycerides)
5. To improve your blood sugar
6. To improve your mood
7. To improve cognition (especially good as we age)
8. To maintain weight

But in order to lose weight you need to change your diet.

Loosing weight is 80% of what you eat.

pretty common knowledge. Calorie restriction is easier but I enjoy riding bike and being outside.

Everyone should be exercising anyway, for their heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall fitness. They also need to make up for all the convenience of modern living. People get fat because they eat too much for what they do. A pro athlete can eat 5,000 calories a day because he burns it. A secretary who can't even bother to use a manual can opener needs to lay off the fast food AND get her butt out of her chair.

But exercising requires effort, and people don't want to hear that any more than they want to hear that they need to stop eating like pigs at a trough.
