I was on birth control for about 8 months, junel fe, and went off of it about 1.5 months ago because I didn't like how it made me feel.
Since then I've suddenly gained 25 pounds and I'm eating less than 1300 calories a day and working out a lot. I'm very frusturated because no matter what I do I keep gaining weight.
I've been to several doctors and have had several tests done, (thyroid, hormone levels, ovary check) all of which came back normal.
Also sometimes I get an uncomfortable bloating in my stomach that makes it stick out very far. Weight on my hips, butt, and thighs have increased. I've suddenly stopped birth in the past before, like 10 years ago and didn't experience this.
I'm extremely uncomfortable and I'm scared that I am going to keep gaining weight...has anyone else experienced anything like this?!?
Also, I'm not pregnant. This is insane. Everyday my weight scale keeps going up,
Whats really interesting is last year I had a 9 day lapse on my prescription, they took too long to deliver it, well in 3 days into the lapse my weight was increasing, I was gaining a pound per day, with no change in diet, by the time I received my refill, I had gained 7lbs in 9 days, I almost had a break down, I've never in my life gain weight like this, I have an athletic, muscular build and I'm not fat. So when I finally got my bcp, the weight gain came to a halt, it magically stopped. The weight gain was noticeable, my co-workers all noticed, I was so embarrassed.
Please help!
Same thing happened to me going off Junel! My pharmacy switched to a generic & I put on 30 lbs in one month. By the time they got their act together I was 50lbs +. I’m absolutely humiliated & angry about this!

After I got the ‘right stuff’ I actually then stopped taking it because it made my legs feel heavy & I worried about blood clots. I don’t even know what to do next but I do know that if some man that’s never had an ovary in his body suggests ‘diet & exercise’? I’m going to scream.

It’s been about 6 months now for me & the weight gain has slowed but I think it’s still increasing. And it’s weird weight too. Hard to explain. My hair has also grown about a foot & that’s not even an exaggeration.

At this rate, should I even worry about DVTs & embolisms? I’m beginning to wonder. I was sick for 10 years from post tubal ligation Syndrome & finally had a reversal in 2014. My hair quit falling out, my mood swings leveled off & I had just lost the 40+ lbs I had gained ... & now this.

I AM DONE.

I am going back on it. I don't know WTF that stuff did to me but apparently I'm f'd. I can't do obesity; I have a rash under my breasts & stress incontinence when I sneeze & its this WEIGHT.

At least when I die from a DVT they won't have to special order my coffin. Looking for a class action; this is BS.

I'm doing the same. Nervous about it though! Let us know if it helps you and I'll do the same. I fortunately, didn't gain as much as some of you but I've always been pretty thin and always maintained a healthy weight. I got off the pill about a year ago and gained like 20lbs. I had been doing HIT exercises and barr for 2.5 years at that point and had a low body weight prior. At first I thought it was because I turned 30. Nothing I did helped. I changed my diet to a keto diet which relieved my bloat and some of my pain, though I can't shake the last 10 lbs. My stomach pain is flaring up again, so I went to the gyno to see if maybe I had PCOS because I have had a ruptured cyst in the past. My ultrasound came back negative for cysts. Which leaves me now wondering if it's endometreosis? They can't test me for that without doing surgery... Anyway, I started the pill last night and the pain is subsiding...

I’ve been on oral BC since my teens. Never had weight gain or negative side effects. I went off at age 48 and everything hit the fan. Crazy fast weight gain. About 40 lbs. in 5 months. MISERABLE! Regular exercise , counting calories, to trying old tricks, and every new diet tip...and NOTHING helped. Doc put me on bio identical progesterone since tests showed I no longer make my own. Thought it would solve problem but had zero effect on my weight gain. In lots of reading, I recently came across a hit or two on how a water balance problem can be a big factor in this situation. It made sense to me because I was thinking my fat seemed more like bad bloat and water retention head to toe. I knew I wasn’t consuming enough calories to warrant this much weight gain. I started taking Dandelion root, a natural diuretic (also a phytoestrogen) and I FINALLY see a glimmer of hope!!! I’m starting to see my waist again, clothes got more comfortable, and I’m feeling lighter. It’s only been a few days but improvement started right away. I followed instructions for first couple days, felt some results immediately. I have upped the dose, since collecting more info on safe smounts to take. It’s a safe product but check for contraindications with other medications before use, as you should with any supplement. Hoping this improvement continues because it’s been hormonal hell until now!

Default Finding answers

I, like most of you, have struggled with weight gain since quitting birth control. I had my thyroid checked and that came back normal. I have been so miserable that I decided to go back on...Its been a month now, but I hate the thought of putting synthetic hormones in my body and would much rather live a healthy lifestyle. So, I have been doing so,e research. Turns out, despite what gynecologists claim, birth control pills have some very serious side-effects one of which is the creation of hormone imbalances. If you are gaining weight around your thighs, stomach and hips, it may be due to estrogen dominance and low progesterone. I am reading a book called "A 30-Day Program to Balance Your Hormones, Reclaim Your Body, and Reverse the Dangerous Side Effects of the Birth Control Pill" and I admit, it sounds gimmicky as hell, but I am desperate. I will test this out and let you know if her plan works. Though I do suggest you ladies checkout the symptoms and treatments for Estrogen Dominance on your own too. Who knows, maybe it will help?

If the removal of birth-control pills is the only factor, and it has been 6 week since you last took them, I can very much understand being frustrated.

I would talk to my family-doctor and if they do not come-up with a very good hypothesis, ask them for a referral to what they think is the best specialist you should see for your problem.

It sounds like the OP has the Ovary Body type.

Read this: https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/ar.../#.XgD4J5JKhN0

Quote:
The ovary body shape is also related to female hormones, where the person gains weight in the thighs and lower belly.

“This type tends to have menstrual cycle issues from heavy bleeding to irregular periods to ovary cysts and even fibroids,” Berg said. “Cyclic headaches and cravings for dairy are common.”

Crowe recommends adding cruciferous veggies such as broccoli and cauliflower to the diet for those with this body type, increase exercise volume and discuss prescription estrogens with their doctor.
This makes a lot of sense that if you go back on BC pill you lose weight which controls your estrogen production. When you take BC, the body stops producing estrogen. If your body makes too much estrogen from stress and eating a lot of dairy. I would switch to almond drinks.

You need to cut down on dairy and not workout too much or hard. Eating a raw plant diet with whole raw grains will help here. Don't eat too much red meat or dairy, that will increase your estrogen production which will make you gain weigh.

I find this thread a little counterintuitive. Oral contraceptives were widely available c. 1967, and I was married then and started taking them. Had to switch brands a couple of times because they made me throw up. I had married too early, got divorced, and quit taking them.

But common knowledge, back then, was that the pill caused weight gain. Not that stopping them caused weight gain. What has changed?

In my mid twenties I was on the combined pill for only 6 months, as soon as I stopped taking it my weight exploded and before that I was a slim and fit woman. Then went for a copper coil inserted and had this for about 5 years and had no weight issues, but and this is a big but, my period were soo long and heavy and so painful. I had terrible cystic acne around my neck and jaw line. I didn't realize the copper in the coli that was released in my womb was causing all this. The acne problem and the painful periods disappeared soon after I had the coil removed.I am now in my early 30's and last year I though I will try the Depo-Provera injection. This is contraceptive injection that contains the hormone progestin. Here in the UK it is given as an injection every three months and typically suppresses ovulation. I used it for a year and as soon as I stopped- I put 20 pounds in weight in less than 2 months.I haven't increased my calorie intake. It was horrible, absolutely vile not to be able to wear any item of clothing I possessed and everyone kept remarking on my sudden shape change. I am only 5 foot 2 and had suddenly increased my body weight by 20%. I have to say that I exercise 4 times a week, do spinning, HIT and count calories and the weight has hardly shifted. I have only been able to loose 6 pounds. I have had my thyroid, hormones- testosterone, prolactin, oestradiol hormones tested and all are normal. For me there hasn't been one method of contraception that hasn't negatively affected me.
