Heard about those but never tried any of them, sorry. My diet plan in that era was taekwondo, swimming and brown rice/vegetables. And playing the violin 6-8 hrs./day. Food For Life 1st. ed. came out back then and it and similar books were widely influential.

Dr. McDougall also had an immense influence, along with others. See:

My late father in law had one of those belt thingies.
It was mainly because he liked watching one of his ex-wive's butt jiggle.
That was about all it was good for.

That's so funny. I remember those belt things. Utterly useless but all the spas had them.

The Last Chance Diet was a protein sparing modified fast (PSMF). It was designed horribly, but done properly, a PSMF is a great way to lose fat very very quickly.

Some of those diets are so dangerous. People died. Some had heart attacks and died in the parking lot at work (for example). The only way to safely lose weight is slowly, via a lifestyle change and refitting of attitudes and habits with respect to food. No quick fix, no magic bullet, no success without knowledge.

That's because they were designed incredibly poorly.

Wrong.
Well not the *only* way, but the safest way. And the way to affect permanent change. People can lose weight with crash diets, but they usually gain the weight back. And then some. Yo-yo dieting is very bad for your health.

The belt massager is my all time favorite. Back in 2000 I was in Europe and they had a 1 hr infomercial of a nude woman using one. Because it was in Dutch I have no idea what they claimed it to do but as a 30yo I was interested.
