Complex carbs like brown rice, quinoa, whole-grain bread, sweet potatoes. Avoid white flour, white rice, and white potatoes. Complex carbs will fill you up better, don't convert to sugar as quickly (so they "stay with you" longer and give better energy), and they have more nutrients.

Lots of fiber, found in the foods above, as well as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Fiber helps you feel full, cleans out your digestive tract, and cancels out some of the fat in your diet. Try to eat at least one fruit or vegetable with every meal.

Lean protein, like poultry, fish, skim milk, beans, and nuts. Pay attention to serving sizes, as well as mercury content in some fish.

Good fats, found in olives, tree nuts (like cashews and almonds, not peanuts--they don't grow in trees), avocados, and fish.
