I like bringing protein bars/shakes to work as a mid-afternoon snack (or meal replacement on a busy day). What are your favorite brands? I'd like something to have 10-20g of protein, minimal sugar, and tasty. Any ideas?

Regarding protein bars, my go to is MET-Rx, but only as a ration for when I can't get a real meal. When my father was laid up in a hospital for days at a time, I'd go buy a bunch of these protein bars, bring a bag of them to the hospital, and leave them in the room for sibling to nosh on when they got hungry at 2:00 AM.

My hospital-associated therapist-lead weight loss group recommended HMR 800 Shakes as meal replacements for quick weight loss. The idea was to drink a shake about every three hours, a total of five a day, with a small meal for dinner. That would result in a daily caloric intake of about 1200 to 1300 calories which, along with exercise, would lead to significant weight loss over a three month period. After that, a dietician would teach the group members how to properly cook low calorie meals that we'd want to eat on a regular basis.

I read the nutrition label for the HMR shakes and found that each one contained 18 grams of sugar, something a diabetic should avoid. To the disapproval of the group therapist, I switched over to Premier Protein Plus, which had only 1 gram of sugar per shake. Note that Premier Protein has a disclaimer that its shakes are not meal replacements; still, they worked out fine for me.

They are all junk. Might get by with the zero sugar bar. Check the ingredients. Get your protein from food.

Kind Breakfast Bars are better, non-GMO, all natural ingredients, and higher levels of protein.

They have very little, 9 grams of sugar for two peanut butter breakfast bars.

That’s 9g of processed sugar. I get mine from fruits and veggies.
