Thanks. I paid $79 for a second opinion yesterday, and the estimate was just as high. Apparently my 7 yr old dog has bad teeth and needs molars removed which they consider oral surgery. I get it, but don't understand how pricing can fluctuate so wildly! The only vet school around here is in Manhattan which is expensive anyway, and inconvenient as I live in the far burbs. All the vets I called will not give general price ranges without an office consult running anywhere between $75-100. That is what bugs me. I am currently on the wellness plan at Banfield(not including dental). I have been fine with them for wellness, but something this major concerns me as the doctors there are new. Around here, since I am not a "client", I have to go in and meet with the vet, so I have no way of knowing before hand who is reasonable! Paying the price for living in an expensive area I guess...My dogs have a great family, just not one with lots of cash!!!

The vets are giving you best case and worst case scenarios, so without any complications, infections, impactions, etc you may well come out on the low range of the estimate.

Geographic location makes a difference of course as the vet's overhead is higher in higher cost areas, and generally speaking anywhere within 75-100 miles of NYC is a high cost of living location.

All I can say about the various costs associated with dogs is that when I run into a higher than normal expense (my last was $4k!), I use plastic and then do a balance transfer so that I can pay if off without interest for a year. That said, getting your dog's teeth done now will improve her health considerably so that hopefully you will have fewer vet bills going forward.

Good luck to you and pup.

For that money, you could take a vacation to a cheaper area, have the dog treated, and enjoy a few days of sunshine. You'd be money ahead.

TodAy our rescue dog got his 7 teeth pulled and also got nueter. Total cost from the vet was 240. ( 175 for 7 teeth and 65 for nueter).
