Anyone know what it runs to have a tooth extracted on a dog?

Our pup broke one of his lower canine teeth in an escape attempt from his crate a while back (no more crate for him...). Our new vet said it will likely get infected because pulp is showing and once we are done treating his scabies we can talk about options. He doesn't show any signs of pain from it yet. She said his tongue might hang out the side it's extracted from...he would certainly look goofy if that's the case bc he has a long tongue!

My Boston Terrier suffered a slab fracture of the largest molar in her mouth and had to have the remainder of the tooth and roots removed. I just pulled her records and it was $274.

But, having a brachycephalic breed, I opt for all the bells and whistles such as pre-op blood work, open IV line, pulse oximeter and only ISO or SEVO anesthesia(s).

Broken canine teeth are a very very common experience for working breeds. I see you are in Charlotte NC.

Go see Dr Queck off of South Tryon. She does the work for Charlotte PD. She is a board certified veterinary dentist. She resolved my horror story when I trusted a reguar vet and one dog's teeth.

Vet dental procedures can be fairly prolonged - there is no such thing as a "simple" Canine tooth extraction as the roots are very long. I woulr recommend the panel and paying extra for sevofluorane (the anesthetic).

For my dog - upper Canine Root canal was $1000 - No crown (only crown worth having is titanium and $$$$$$$)

Risks with extraction - upper canine-oronasal fistula, lower canine-breaking the jaw. Molars are a peice of cake but the canine root is very very long - runs about half the length of the lower jaw and is part of the structure of the jaw itself.

Is the tooth clearly dead or is it viable? The vet should be able to test and tell you. makes a difference.

---------------

I found a link to a good article

And this is Dr Queck - not cheap but I can say only good things about this clinic. She did braces on one dog when another vet refused to extract a retained puppy tooth which results in such a severe misalignment of the lower canine that it started to penetrate the roof of the mouth, and did a root canal on a broken canine on a second dog. Our root canal was done in late 2005 - tooth is now just a nub but no further issues.

i just paid $270 for one of my cats to have her teeth cleaned and 2 extracted.... one of her canines had broken and when i took her to the vet, he discovered what terrible condition the rest of her teeth were in .... by the time we went back the next day so he could anesthetize her, the original broken canine had already fallen out, but he ended up having to pull 2 more teeth while he had her under.......

Wow. I guess it depends on where you live. My cat had 2 canine teeth extracted it cost $545, apparently it's a complex procedure. You might want to shop around. When my dog became ill a couple of weeks later I couldn't afford my regular vet so I called the Humane Society and they directed me to a 'low cost' vet, he's great and Publix offers free antibiotics for pets as well as humans so if you have the chain in your area, or one that offers free antibiotics it's worth checking out.

I am in Fort Myers- any chance you can pass the name of that vet along? Is he/she in the area by chance?
Best Regards.

Sorry Tracy, I'm on the Treasure Coast =( But I got the name of the vet from the ASPCA, you might want to call them and the Humane Society for a low cost vet in your area, also the local shelters. It turned out that my vet works with the local rescue, we recently adopted a puppy and I had met the man who runs the shelter at the vet's office when I had my dog there. Sorry about your dog, it's so painful =( Hope you can find a vet soon.

$5 a couple of months ago. But the dog was already under for neutering. It's the anesthetic part of the procedure that is so expensive. The vet just popped the tooth out while he was doing the rest of it.

Free toe nail clip while the dog was out, too.
