My mini dachshund almost always makes coughing/choking sounds after she drinks water. I thought maybe she was drinking it too fast and have watched her but no matter how much or how fast she drinks, this will happen. Any ideas why?
My dog does that too (Shiba Inu mix) and I can't figure out why. She doesn't really cough or choke, but she sounds like she is about to (exhaling quickly and forcefully, like an old guy clearing his throat).

Could be something with her larynx, has she looked like she gained weight or that her fat/muscle has moved to her belly?
I think what the OP might be talking about is called a "reverse sneeze". My Mom's dachshund does the same thing on occasion. Just out of the blue and out of a sound sleep. She's done that her whole life. I know it's more common in dog's with short muzzles, so that's the part I'm confused about. My Beagle will do it once in a great while and my Mom's dog does it all the time, but both have normal muzzles. Every time I ask our vet about it or look it up on the internet I get the same answer. Almost nothing is known about it other than the name. If anyone else has more info to add to that, please enlighten us.
i agree with the reverse sneeze. when we got our first foster doxie we were warned that he would make that weird sound. seems normal. but if you are really concerned, talk to your vet.
Do you have a raised water bowl and food bowl? That seems to help prevent that - smooshed nosed dogs have no choice with the reversed sneezing, but when an episode happens, just cover your dogs nose and get them to breath out of the mouth. It corrects the problem. Just make sure you are very calm about doing this, so you don't freak your dog out and create a bigger situation - a fearful, coughing dog. Good Luck!
Not sure if a dachsund w/b able to drink out of a raised bowl, given how low they are to the ground but would walk her using a harness, less stress / pressure on their tracheas which are usually delicate in small breeds.
My dog does this as well after she drinks. She is a beagle mix and drinks from a raised bowl. I didn't know if it was because she drinks and jumps around right after. She seems fine and not like it bothers her.

They have raised feeders of all sizes. Ideally, you want the dog to eat and drink without bending down. you would rather them being at shoulder level or a bit higher. It all depends on the dog and there are adjustable feeders out there that allow you to change the level pretty conveniently rather than risk being too tall for a dog or too short for a dog.
