Its just like passenger bumping due to over crowding with the added issue of allergeies. If someone object to being by the animal, the airline will try to accomodate both of you by switching seats or offering another flight. If that can;t be done, the person with the animal is bumped involuntarily. Its rare and usually things wiork out but be prepared that it can happen.
One other thing you have to deal with is you will have to get through security with the animal. You will be asked to remove the dog from the carrie and carry it through (although some may let it walk through) the security checkpoint. My advice is to practice removing you dog from the carrier and walking through a doorway with it in hand and putting it back in the carrier. This means you should limit your carryon to the bare minimum. Since most animal collars and leashes are made with metal, odds are you will be sent for secondary screening. If you have the time and can find it, there are TSA colars and leashes made without metal (nylon fastners and such) that will avoid the seconday screening. But its important that your dog be use to being taken out, carried by hand, and returned to the crate with strange noises and people all around it.
If you are flying to Phoenix, check the airports website because they do have dog parks in the airport 9right outside the ends of the terminal) that you can take the dog for a pee and poop before claiming luggage. Your dog will love you for that.
For the tortise, many pet shops that deal in reptiles may have a premade shipping box that you can buy or at least let you see what they look like so you do the right thing. I also belive that regulations require that the shipping package be new construction unless designed specifically for multiple uses. But two used cardboard boxes won't make the grade.

love you! lol Mike is checking on the dog park right now to see where it is at the airport. Such great advice. the kids are very good on and off the leash. Mike said the doggy park is right by the bagage claim and said that is awesome. I bow down to you for this info and the rest of it. Thanks

Anytime. Search "dogs" and "Miaiam" and you will probably find some of them. My experience is with small dogs, quite a few times, and always in-cabin, since I refuse to fly dogs in cargo.
I would love to get bigger dogs too, but as I have to travel now and then and would never agree to fly them cargo (I know, I know, it is unlikely anything happens to them, but they are just too precious for me to even think about taking chances.)
If you have any questions I can help with, I would be glad to help.

I also could not put my dogs in cargo, it would be such a scary thing for me so it would be double for the dogs since they cant understand what is going on. My babies need to be with me, hey it maybe selfish, but I probably need them more with me then they need to be with me, lol.

Absolutely not. I feel for the ones who have bigger dogs and when they move there is very little alternative - they either have to pretty much drive across the country or go by ship.
Which loving dog owner doesn't need them, after all?

Since it has not been mentioned, check up on Health Certificates. Depending on where you are flying and which airline, the animals need one to board.
