About once or twice a day Shep will suddenly race around our family room in circles. Sometimes it could be he is just getting excited about something going on. But I've seen him do it when no one else is around. The first couple of times I tackled him and he quieted down. But that's hard to do because he's very fast, and after I bashed my shin I decided to quit. Now when he gets going we all just stand off to the side (esp. the kids) and wait til he's done, usually about 15-20 seconds.
Why does he do this? Is this a bad thing? I wanted him to stop initially because I was afraid of my youngest getting knocked over. But now she stands off to the side, or I go and stand with her, move her over, etc. and we just wait.
Today he did it right after we got back from a 2 mile walk. He was looking pretty mellow, but he got happy to see my babysitter. Come to think of it, when she arrived earlier he got very happy to see her, and I guess was trying to get her attention, so he started wiggling and wagging, then suddenly off he goes. She's very comfortable with dogs and him, doesn't show him an excessive amount of attention, but is friendly. Anyway, he does it plenty of times when she's not there, so I know it's not her.
When I took my dog to puppy classes, we discussed this issue. Normally, then do it around 10P or when they are about to go to bed. It is normal dog thing.
I have two Boston Terriers and we call it the BT 500. They only do it outdoors.
My Frenchie has his own version...he runs around and under tables, chairs and then uses the sofa as a rebound surface...he makes about 4 loops and we call that the Frenchie 250
LOL Or, we sometimes refer to the mania as the "zoomies!" Totally normal, just running off some energy.
I can instigate them by singing, "Who let the dogs out? Woof! Woof! Woof!"
My beagle basset actually does the three barks at the proper time, then he goes into the puppy crazies!
Of course, he will go into the puppy crazies on his own for no reason too.
The lab used to do puppy crazies but he's too old now to go 100%. Sometimes he still goes into the puppy crazies but it's a much more subdued performance these days.
My dog will do this but only after you give her a bath, actually a little scary sometimes because she gets way out of control to the point she's running into things.
My first dog used to spin in circles. That was hilarious. This is a little more scary because there's kid furniture and kids standing around. But as long as it's normal He hasn't crashed into anything yet.
Or going stir-crazy from boredom and wants to liven things up!
All my dogs have done it. I like it, but then they've always seemed happy when they've done it, so I think my first guess is true in their cases.
