The A.K.C. is “dedicated to upholding the integrity of its registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function,” according to its mission statement.

But the A.K.C. is increasingly finding itself ostracized in the dog world, in the cross hairs of animal protection services, law enforcement agencies and lawmakers who say that the club is lax in performing inspections and that it often lobbies against basic animal rights bills because they could cut into dog registration fees.

Best dog I ever had came from the humane society.

The AKC is a racket that encourages breeding and should be stopped.

The only dogs I've ever had have come from the humane society or kill shelters. And I agree about the AKC. What happened to standards? I don't find them the least bit credible anymore.

Thank you for posting this article, RedJacket.

People who neglect animals in this way are evil.

No they didn't. You don't think dogs will reproduce unless someone "breeds" them? WAY too may pregnant dogs end up in shelters and have puppies on death row. Unfortunately, there are enough strays that mate on their own that no one HAS to breed.
