Heart Worm Preventative Pills (vet, prescription, costs, fleas)

My husband had several dogs growing up. He sadly lost one to heart worm.

He was telling me the other day, they have a heart worm pill with garlic or something in it that prevents heart worm...

Does anyone know what the name of it might be? or can suggest good preventatives to give our puppy...

Interceptor is one, Heartgard is another, you need to have your dog tested (blood test) to make sure he doesnt already have hw before putting him on the meds (btw, garlic is not involved alth. it can help prevent fleas but needs to be used w/ caution as some dogs may have a reaction to it).

PS Missed the part that your dog is a puppy, he likely doesnt have hw but it's best to take him to the vet for his vacc's and ask at that time, wouldnt hesitate w/ the vacc's, he needs the protection now.

Thanks for the info we are planning on finding and taking him to the vet soon. I will still ask the vet in addition to this post.. but thought I would see what options are out there

I use Sentinel for my dogs. It's done well for us....I live in Florida, where it is mosquito heaven here!

I use Sentinel as well...The sooner you start your puppy, the better! Heart Worm is horrible death!

My hubby told me one of his childhood dogs had a horrible death from heart worm... so I really want to avoid it and do what I can.

We get a lot of mosquitos here too, we have to have "sprayings" done to keep them down...

As others have mentioned, your dog will need an annual test before any of these medications are given. And they're prescription drugs, you MUST have them prescribed by a vet.

If $ is one of your considerations (as it is with most people) in purchasing the heart worm preventative, there is a generic for Heart Guard called IverHart which costs less. Also, if you buy from a reputable source, you can purchase your preventative on line and save money.
