Our little pooch spends a large chunk of her time walking on 3 legs! She often has her rear left leg up in the air.
She's a 1 year old American Hairless Terrier (Rat Terrier without hair).
We've had her 8 months now, and she has been doing this since we got her. The breeder told us about this when we got her, since she has been doing it since she was born. The breeder had her checked out by 2 different Vets. They checked her spine, her Patellas, her hips. We also had her checked by 3 different Vets.
She initially did this on very rare occasions, only when walking on soft grass. However, recently she has been doing it a lot, and on pavement as well as grass. Because the frequency suddenly increased significantly, we took her to Vet again. THis time she found a little ulcer between two of her toes. She looked very very closely & it appears that the toes on that left leg may be a hair closer together than the toes on the other feet.
We were given an antiinflammatory for the ulcer, and it cleared up in one day. That was a week ago. But she is still walking frequently with that leg up in the air. She actually moves pretty quickly on 3 legs. When she walks very slowly, that leg does not go up in air. When she runs that leg does not go up in air (And you should see her run - she outruns every dog in the doggie park, even the greyhound that hangs out there!). Leg only up when she walks at a nice pace.
We have no idea if she is in pain - it LOOKS uncomfortable, but maybe it's just something she enjoys.
we have a neighbor dog who walks on 3 legs frequently but changes which hind leg is up. Even in mid walk. Very strange to see and yes does run on all 4. could it just be a personality quirk?
