Your puppy just has to get used to the crate. The howling/barking/whining is normal. Just ignore it, and eventually the puppy will get over it and learn that the crate is his space.

Just make sure that the crate is large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. You may also try giving him a treat once in the crate to calm him down, or perhaps a rawhide chew to distract him (please make sure that you supervise him so he does not choke on the rawhide).

Here are a few things that made the process easier for me:
1. Never make the crate a place for punishment - always make it a fun place to go to.
2. Make the crate part of your living area, keeping it open so your pup can wander in and out during the day. I made sure to keep a toy or two in it at all times and our pup learned it was a sure fire place to find something to play with or find a hidden treat.
3. Place a sheet or blanket over the back part of the crate to create a serene, safe place for a good night's rest.

At 10 months, my pup will actually wake me if I have fallen asleep to take her down and get settled in her spot.

Remember, it does take time so be patient and the reward will be worth it!
