I have a 2yr old small breed dog that is totally house trained. I had surgery back in December and in January and he was not put in his kennel much during that time. Now that I have returned to work full time he is back in his kennel for several hours out of the day. EVERYDAY FOR THE PAST MONTH he has pooped in it. I have tried everything no bedding in it, I don't feed him past 7p and make sure he does his business by morning before I put him in it. I am so tired of coming home and having to bath him every evening. I am at my witts end. What do I do? Please someone give me some advice.
Do you actually see him poop in the morning? If you are maybe he's needs more time to completely empty things out. The poor guy is obviously having trouble holding it. Dogs generally don't want to soil their dens. Have you changed food? Changed his routine from before your surgery? Maybe there's something physical going on and he needs to see a vet.
Can you not put him in the bathroom with puppy pads and a baby gate? That would solve your problem and he wouldn't have to be in his crate that long every day.
is it possible to feed him by 5 pm? those couple of hours may make a difference. You don't say how long he is crated... if longer then 5 hrs any chance of having someone come by and let him out? This could be phased out once he gets back into the routine.
His routine was disrupted during your surgery. Now he has a new routine. I agree that he probably needs more time to get the poop out. Is he crated or do you use an x-pen? How big is he? I've known little dogs that were litterbox trained. Dig up some sod and put it in a litterbox. That will give him an appropriate place to poop
