I have a male dog and a female dog. For quite some time, I have seen the male dog squat to pee, instead of lifting his leg. Within the past week or so, though, I've spotted my female dog going up to a tree or bush and lifting her leg. Are these two actually mimicking each other or is this just an odd coincidence?

I don't know. That is interesting. I did have a Bouvier that continued to stretch out like a puppy. That was at home. If we went to a park he would raise his leg and pee on the trees. We have plenty of trees at home, but I guess it wasn't necessary to raise a leg if there wasn't any other dog pee smell to cover.

My son had a male JRT who started doing the stretch to pee rather than lifting a leg as he got older. I suspect he may have had some arthritis that made it hurt to lift a leg.

The female mixed breed that joined the family always lifted a leg. I think she learned it from the JRT.

We had a male and a female who did the same as yours. The male was a sweet, doofus Lab, and the female was (according to the DNA swab) a Shar-Pei/Rottweiler/Cocker Spaniel (!!) cross. We called her a dragon. She mellowed with age, but I would say she was pretty dominant.

My JRT stretches like a puppy about 90% of the time, occassionally lifts his leg on a push (we have deer so I think he is trying to cover them). My female doesnt do anything weird. I guess some pups just do their own thing

When I still owned my last dog and got my current one (as a pup) my older dog was female and my puppy was male. Kaya, my girl, would often lift her hind leg to urinate on a bush, though she would still squat at times as well. I attributed this to her personality...she was very dominant in nature, and the action of a male lifting his leg seems to suggest dominance (the higher the scent trail, the 'larger' a footprint the dog leaves). However, my pup Izzy squatted to urinate (as pups will do) but it took him a very long time to learn the act of leg hoisting. I believe he was well over a year old before he started. So for quite a while I had a female who lifted her leg on our walks, and a male who squatted.

(Of course, this doesn't explain my goofy Izzy - now 9 years old - who, at least a couple of times after learning to raise a leg, would sidle up to a tree or bush on his left, only to raise his right leg to pee. )

Interesting. I hadn't thought about it, but my male dog only squats/stretches when he's in our yard. On walks, he never does.
