My dogs are so well-behaved and clean that most don't apply to us. I would have to admit that since they are both 10+ now that I indulge them more. "Ok, just one more." They are treated very well for dogs but I have always been aware that they are not people so that really helps.

I guess I've just been lucky. Or I have been reading enough stuff to know not to do this.

5. Potty Time Is NOT Play Time

$@#$!! My girl knows this, but she likes to test that theory about once a year. And she really tested it when she was a pup. She held it for 24 hours one time, just because she's such a punk dog. She wanted to win THAT badly. (This was AFTER she already knew what she was supposed to do.) I brought her out on leash to her spot, stood there, did not look at her, did not acknowledge her, did not engage with her...and she would sit there and stare at me. I would take her back in, put her in the crate, and we would repeat this process every 15 minutes for twenty. four. hours.

I finally was so tired that I looked online how to MAKE a dog go to the bathroom. I found a site that talked about dogs that had just had surgery in their back area, and how to massage along their back end to make them do their thing. You don't have to touch anything gross, but you massage in the general area.

She went whether she wanted to or not, and proceeded to walk back in to the house with her head hanging down in shame because she LOST. That's right, she. LOST! HA HA! In your face, dog!

But still, once a year, she tests again. Grrrr.
