the likelyhood of finding a pure basenji in a shelter is LOW...but without a pic cant tell ya. but a basenji mix is possible...
it is true however basenjis dotn bark, they do however, growl yip, yodle ect...
will check back for pictures.
the easiest way is to upload them to a site like photobucket then simply copy/past the img link.
Actually, you are more likely to find a full bred Besanji at a shelter. These dogs are very independent, and diffcult for many owners to manage. We had one while I was growing up. He was fiercely loyal, and protective, but did not listen to anything we had to say. This is not an easy dog to manage. So, many people who don't know dogs or the breed, would turn this great dog into the shelter. This dog ain't no Golden Retriever!
i dunno, basenji arnt exactly common or cheap most people buying a basenji have done their reserch...and thos that do get one on a whim...welll they tend to be pulled from shelters pretty quick by rescue/breed specific groups. i have seen plenty of mixes in shelters though, unfortunatly when added to a mixed breed it tends to increse the basennj persnality and people arnt preped for that in a mixed breed lol.
you are right though, DEFINATLY not a breed for everyone.

Depends on where you live. We have a breeder near the shelter here. When they have too many dogs or some they don't want for whatever reason, they turn them loose. Other times some will escape. Big time BYB / puppy mill situation. I've got one of them here now and he will be leaving this weekend to go to his adoptive home in Chicago.
Apparently we get them in the shelter four or five times a year and it's usually several at a time. We're trying to find out who it is and refer them to the rescue in WI. Not a solution but at least we won't be picking dead ones off the road.

This is true, from all I read about them, they can be difficult to train and have not been domesticated for all that long.

I adopted 2 basenji mixes from a rescue shelter. One fits the basenji description too well and the other looks like one but doesn't really act like one.
They are difficult to train and even though they don't bark, the yodel can be just as loud/annoying.

Yep, he resembles a Basenji, but not the personality, he actually listens somewhat and does bark, so he is probably a mix.
