They play classical music sometimes on the PA for the animals at our shelter and it does seem to relax them. Experimentation showed country seemed to have a good effect too, but the humans were too divided about it! Classical is a little easier to tune out if it's not your favorite.
I don't think it affects them any differently than it does me. When I need extra energy- especially for housework- I put on fast tempo music and when I want to relax I put on mellow tunes. they react the same way I do.
I love Irish folk and have recently fine tuned the speakers where it has all the 'little' sounds. Dogs and cats stretch out in range of the music and go into silent and relaxed mode. Not a sound, but they come where its nice and loud. It may be the ONLY time when my young dog, (year and a half) isn't looking for something to bark at.
I listen to a very wide range of music. If music is too loud or too fast, it will make the pups nervous. Other than that, they seem to be indifferent.
