I found this while I was doing some work in my back yard. My dog is extremely interested in playing with it.
Is it safe for her to play with it like this or should I hacksaw it into little pieces? Sometimes she scratches herself when she plays with irregularly shaped sticks.
If I do saw it up do I need to file down the edges?
I would not let Chevy PLAY with that - but I have seen antlers for sale as a chew toy.... I definitely would cut it down do chew size pieces... BUT I have also seen and heard that pigs hooves are a good chew toy. I bought one for Chevy and she chewed a piece off that looked like and Indian arrowhead - more of a point and sharper than most - NO MORE pigs hooves for dat girl ....
My dogs have antlers that they chew on, they are cut into 8-9 inch lengths and the sawed ends have been filed. We keep ours in the house, sometimes if they are exposed to the elements for too long they become brittle and then are dangerous for the dogs.
My dogs love them. Wolves would also chew on them.
They are solid & they are a source of calcium.
I let my pups chew on them and my full grown dogs.
For the pups I use a small antler and round off the tines with a grinder.
I have one GSD that will sneak off at night after everyone is asleep go down stairs find a antler and chew it there. Then come back up stairs leaving the antler behind.
The little sneak doesn't want to share it with the other dogs.

Reason: sp errors
I too would cut it down into chew sticks Chaos has one from the pet store and she loves it and so far it is the longest lasting chew she has had...and they are expensive!
Lop off the points about three inches back. Then if the dog chews it into shards take it away.
That antler appears to be from an older deer that has degraded from the standard 4x4 into a three pointer. The length of the eye guard tells the story.
You could also use it as a decoration. I have several in my garage and as Landscape decoration in my cactus pots. Find them all the time while deer hunting here in the western states.
